Pipeline Masters wrapping up
After a second consecutive lay day, the Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons will run its final day either today or Saturday.
Organizers will make the call at 7:30 a.m. whether to hold the competition today but likely wait until Saturday when conditions are expected to be better. The Pipe Masters is the third and final jewel in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.
When competition resumes, Heat 1 of Round 5 will feature C.J. Hobgood of Florida against two-time ASP World Champion and current ASP World No. 1 Mick Fanning of Australia.
Tahitian Michel Bourez leads the Vans Triple Crown rankings, but, because he has been eliminated, there are several scenarios where he could be overtaken. A third-place finish by either Hawaii’s John John Florence or Sebastian Zietz would allow them pass Bourez while a win by either Australia’s Yadin Nicol or Fanning would put them ahead of the Tahitian. France’s Jeremy Flores needs a fifth-place finish to overtake Bourez in the rankings.
Memorial Saturday for rugger Wilbur
Former professional football player and rugby union forward John Wilbur will be remembered Saturday in a memorial held by his club, the Hawaii Harlequins, at Kapiolani Park.
Wilbur died Monday at age 70 after a lengthy illness.
The memorial starts at 1:30 p.m. Three 20-minute "friendly" matches will follow.
Women’s football championship Sunday
Undefeated Wahine Koa looks to defend its title Sunday when it takes on the Bombshells for the fall senior championship of the Hawaii Women’s Gridiron League.
The consolation game begins at noon at Kapiolani Park followed by the title contest.
