Riverdale is a dynastic team, no doubt about it.
The girls basketball team from Murfreesboro, Tenn., used a suffocating fullcourt press and got a sparkling performance from Shelbie Davenport — 29 points, two 3-pointers, seven rebounds, four assists and five steals — as her team outlasted Kamehameha 67-45 on Thursday in the opening round of the ‘Iolani Classic.
Alexa Middleton added 18 points for Riverdale, including nine in the third quarter.
The visiting Warriors finished last season ranked No. 1 by MaxPreps after a 35-0 season. They came to the islands ranked No. 17 with a 6-1 record.
Riverdale brought a following of about 20 fans and kept them entertained with a swirling, high-octane fullcourt press. They overwhelmed Kamehameha, the defending state champion, in the opening quarter. By the time the hometown Warriors settled down, they trailed by 20 points in the second quarter.
Davenport, a 6-foot forward, did a little of everything. She moved without the ball, dished sweet passes underneath and hit long-range treys.
Arriving in the islands on Wednesday, the visitors were not exactly comfortable in 75- to 85-degree temperatures. It was 22 degrees back in their hometown.
"It was awful. We could not get up and down the floor. The air’s so much different here, I guess," Davenport said. "Coach said we need to get up and down the floor and play our game, keep pushing no matter what, pushing, pushing, pushing."
The air-conditioned confines of ‘Iolani’s gym helped some. So did a little long-distance motivation.
"This morning, we got a text asking us if we’re here to win or if we’re here to vacation," said Davenport, a commit to Clemson. "We’re here on a business trip. We’re here to win."
Coach Cory Barrett’s team forced Kamehameha into 23 turnovers. The visitors pulled back their press by the second quarter, but the lead was 20 points by then. Kamehameha began to adjust to the taller Warriors. Tiare Kanoa had two steals for layups as Kamehameha closed the gap to 33-21 at the half.
After Makana Aleki stepped out and swished a 3, Kamehameha was within 39-26 early in the third quarter. Davenport and Middleton took over from there. Middleton, a commit to Tennessee, added five rebounds.
Aleki led Kamehameha with 14 points and Kanoa, a returning all-state guard, scored 11. Alohi Robins-Hardy, another all-state returnee, had seven rebounds, three assists and four steals, but was held scoreless.
