Kauai collision leaves 4 hurt
Four people — not five — were involved in a critical three-car collision Friday afternoon on Kaumualii Highway in Kipu, Kauai, county police reported Saturday.
At around 2:40 p.m., a Dodge sedan, heading east a quarter-mile west of the Kauai Humane Society, crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Dodge pickup truck. The truck caught fire.
A Ford sedan traveling behind the pickup swerved into the eastbound lane in an attempt to avoid the collision and sideswiped the sedan.
The driver of the pickup, a Kalaheo man, 65, was pulled out before it became engulfed, police said. He was flown to the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where he remains in critical condition.
The 30-year-old male driver of the Dodge sedan and his female passenger, 27, both visitors from New York, were taken to Wilcox Hospital with serious injuries and remain hospitalized.
The driver of the Ford sedan, 19, of Lihue, was taken to Wilcox but released.
Police originally reported that five people were hurt.
