Grodzinsky moves into State Open lead
Jake Grodzinsky shot a 6-under 66 to take the lead after the second round of the Mauna Lani Resort Hawaii State Open on the Big Island on Saturday.
Grodzinsky (137) holds a one-stroke lead over Nick Mason and first-round leader David Fink going into today’s final round of the men’s open division. Defending champion Dean Wilson is two strokes back.
In the women’s division, Mari Chun shot a 1-under 71 to lead with a two-round total of 145. Amateur Brittany Fan is five strokes behind Chun.
Hawaii Pacific tops Brigham Young-Hawaii
Malte Ziegenhagen scored 21 points and Justin Long scored 19 to lead the Hawaii Pacific men’s basketball team to a 79-69 win over Brigham Young-Hawaii in a Pacific West Conference men’s basketball game at the Moanalua High gym on Saturday night.
Rema Lascelles added 11 points for the Sea Warriors (4-2, 2-1), who shot 48 percent from the field and made all 12 of their free throws.
BJ Ford scored 16 points, DeAndre Medlock notched 15 and Jordan Ngatai added 12 for BYUH (3-4, 2-1).
» Ieva Nagy and Skye Savini scored 12 points each to help the Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team beat BYUH 89-48 in a PacWest game at Moanalua.
Mikela Thoemmes scored 11 points and Shianne Solomon and Morganne Comstock added 10 points each for HPU (4-1, 3-1). Whitney Fieldsted had 11 points for BYUH (0-6, 0-2).
» Kirsta Stabler scored 18 points and Megan Wiedemann added 15 as St. Martin’s defeated host Hawaii Hilo 80-53.
Angela Gelhar scored 13 points and Liz Mills added 12 for the Saints (7-3). McKenzie Mangino notched 11 points for UHH (2-5).
