The Coast Guard will begin enforcing a security zone in the water off Kailua Bay in the area where President Barack Obama and his family will be spending their annual Christmas vacation in Hawaii.
The security zone will be in effect from 6 a.m. Friday to 10 p.m. Jan. 5 unless canceled earlier, the Coast Guard said Monday in a news release.
The Coast Guard is coordinating with the Honolulu Police Department, Marine Corps Base Hawaii and other federal, state and county law enforcement agencies on patrols of the area under the direction of the U.S. Secret Service.
The maritime security zone includes a portion of Kailua Bay, beginning at Kapoho Point and extending westward to the shoreline near Kailuana Loop, the Coast Guard said. The zone also includes the adjacent canal beginning near Kapoho Point to a point extending about 150 yards south of the North Kalaheo Avenue Road Bridge.
A marker will be placed on Kailua Beach, a yellow buoy will be placed in the water and an orange boom will be placed in the canal to mark the zone, according to the Coast Guard.
Any person entering the zone without the permission can be fined $40,000 for each violation or prison time not more than 10 years, if convicted, the Coast Guard said.
During annual visits since becoming president, Obama has stayed in a rented home in the Kailuana beachfront section of Kailua along with a host of friends and security personnel.
The White House and local U.S. Secret Service have not released details of when the president is scheduled to arrive.
