Yamanouchi wins soccer referee award
Tiffany Yamanouchi of Pearl City was named the Region IV Young Female Referee of the Year by US Youth Soccer, one of four regional winners nationally.
Yamanouchi, who became certified as a USSF Grade 8 referee in 2010, is eligible for the national award, which will be announced Jan. 17 at the NSCAA Convention.
Yamanouchi, a Pearl City High graduate, also referees and coaches in Nevada, where she is a student at UNLV. In Hawaii, she has officiated at the youth and adult league level.
Wahine Koa repeat as football champions
The Wahine Koa successfully defended its Hawaii Women’s Gridiron League title Sunday by shutting out the Bombshells 26-0 at Kapiolani Park.
Christie Ayers, the defensive player of the year, had three of the team’s five interceptions in the victory. Wahine Koa, coached by August Young, finished the season undefeated.
Players are being sought for the HWGL’s winter season. Registration is $50 and runs through Jan. 20.
Grant to wheelchair tennis program
The Ala Moana Wheelchair Tennis Club was one of 18 wheelchair programs selected to share in $65,000 of grassroots grants by the U.S. Tennis Association.
Grants were awarded to local organizations that promote and develop the growth of wheelchair tennis and use the sport of tennis to build stronger, healthier communities. Monies are used for coaching, court time, equipment, recruitment and events such as tournaments and camps.

Hawaii stop opens SUP world tour
The Turtle Bay Pro will be the opening event of the Stand Up World Tour, one of six stops for the international paddleboard season.
The Hawaii competition is scheduled for Feb. 8-16. Other events run monthly through October and will be held in Brazil, Abu Dhabi, Tahiti, California and France.
Liddell to give seminar today
