Justin Kam scored 11 points in the third quarter to rally top-ranked Punahou past unranked Baldwin 46-39 in the final of the Punahou Invitational boys basketball tournament Saturday.
Kam finished with 16 points, hitting three treys in a row during the third stanza. His barrage came moments after the visitors surged ahead 30-24 with a 10-0 run.
By the time Kam hit his third 3-pointer of the quarter, the Buffanblu (10-0) had a 39-34 lead, capping a 15-4 run.
Baldwin (3-2) chipped away and had it down to 41-37 after Liam Wake hit a trey early in the fourth quarter, but the Bears got no closer.
They were still in range after a follow shot by Teva Eldredge cut the lead to 44-39 with 3:20 remaining. Punahou sat on the ball near midcourt and ate two minutes off the clock. A missed shot in the paint by Kam gave Baldwin an opportunity to slice into the margin, but Eldredge was whistled for an offensive foul.
Dayson Watanabe, who had 12 points, sank two free throws with 24 seconds left to close out the scoring.
Punahou shot 10-for-26 from 3-point range, but was clutch when necessary. Baldwin went to a 2-3 zone in the second half after point guard Kody Takushi and center Josiah Maglente-Tonu got into foul trouble.
"That was our emphasis, to go inside-out against their zone," Punahou coach Darren Matsuda said. "They were physical down low."
Punahou’s fullcourt press had limited success against the Bears, even though the visitors missed senior swingman Ryan Garces. The 6-foot ballhandler was at the tournament earlier for wins over Punahou II and No. 2 Farrington, but flew home on Saturday to attend a winter ball.
With a fairly short rotation, Baldwin began to tire late in the game.
"That’s where Garces would’ve helped," Bears coach Wayne Gushiken said. Garces scored 16 points in the semifinal win over Farrington. "We missed him."
The Buffanblu got long-range bombs from five shooters.
"Darn, all of them can shoot from outside," Gushiken said.
Baldwin’s impressive run was proof of work on the practice court. They were eaten up by ‘Iolani’s press in a loss to the Raiders at the Baldwin tourney recently.
"Their Achilles’ heel used to be the press, but obviously they’ve worked on it," Matsuda said. "We were up 20-2 on them (last year) because of our press. This is the best Baldwin team we’ve seen in three years."
Eldredge finished with 17 points and nine rebounds, then took a call from his grandfather, Carl.
"He watched the game on Punavision," the senior said of the online stream. "Today, we knew what to do. Winning this would’ve meant a lot, to come here and make a statement, but we couldn’t get it done."
Eldredge, who carries a 3.7 grade-point average and played linebacker on the football team, is another undersized (6-foot-2) forward who thrives in Baldwin’s deliberate, precise high-screen offense. He feasted on low-post isolations against taller defenders.
Gushiken was pleased with the progress of Maglente-Tonu, a 6-5 junior, and Miki Fifita, a 6-4 junior. While Maglente-Tonu was on the floor, Baldwin took a 7-0 lead. He left with his third foul and the Bears promptly allowed Punahou 14 consecutive points.
"Our two big guys were our projects," Gushiken said. "It’s good to have a big guy in there."
The Bears, plus Garces, can get to work on earning a state-tourney berth.
"Everybody doesn’t really talk about it, but they know we have the confidence to win states," Eldredge said.
