Suspect held in attack on police officer
A 23-year-old Ala Moana man was arrested early Sunday morning in Waikiki after police say he assaulted an officer.
The man was being escorted from a bar after a confrontation with another customer and a doorman, whose phone he took, police said.
When police were called, the man allegedly assaulted a male officer, 24, as the officer was attempting to get him into a police vehicle.
He was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a law enforcement officer, second-degree theft, third-degree assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and refusing to leave a liquor establishment.
Driver dies despite attempt to rescue him
A man died Sunday after his vehicle apparently veered off a roadway, hit a tree and fell about 30 feet down an embankment in Wailua Homesteads, Kauai County officials said.
A motorcyclist who was in the area about 8:30 a.m. said he heard cries for help coming from the embankment and went to check, officials said by email.
The man told the motorcyclist that he had been stuck in his vehicle for several hours.
The motorcyclist went to where he was able to get cellphone reception and notified authorities. When he returned, he called to the man, but got no response.
By the time firefighters from the Kapaa station rappelled down the embankment, the man had died.
Police closed Kuamoo Road near Loop Road for about four hours.
Beach reopened; lifeguards warn of shark risk
Lifeguards reopened Flemings Beach near Kapalua Sunday morning, but shark warning signs remained posted and lifeguards were telling people not to go into the water because the ocean in the area was murky and full of debris from stream runoff, a Maui Fire Department spokesman said.
Three sightings of a small hammerhead shark near shore prompted officials to close the beach Saturday. No sharks were spotted Sunday morning.
There have been eight shark attacks on Maui this year, two of them fatal. A kayak fisherman from Washington state was killed Dec. 2, and a German tourist died after losing her arm to a shark on Aug. 14.
