Unusually heavy rain drenched Hawaii island’s Hamakua Coast Monday, scattering runoff and debris across the area and causing part of Paauilo Mauka Road near Honokaa to collapse beneath a truck, according to officials.
Hawaii County Civil Defense was alerted to the collapse site near the junction with Manienie Road at about 8 a.m., Civil Defense Administrator Darryl Oliveira said. The rain had caused a culvert beneath the street to shift, which then triggered the roadway’s collapse as a Dodge pickup drove over it.
The truck’s driver, Velma DeLuz, emerged with minor injuries.
But she was "definitely very shaken," Oliveira said. County public works personnel were "trying to come up with a plan" for repairs, but it likely will be a slow fix. Oliveira said.
The rain also caused landslides across an 11-mile stretch of Highway 19, between the mile markers 25 and 36, he said.
Civil defense reported flooding on Ainako Avenue and Kaumana Drive in Hilo and a landslide on the old scenic road near Papaikou. The Muliwai Trail and Waimanu Valley campground in North Kohala closed at 1 p.m. due to flooding.
Severe weather closed the public and school libraries in Keaau, Laupahoehoe and Pahoa.
At Hilo airport, 5.51 inches of rain fell, breaking the 24-hour record of 4.58 inches set in 1951.
The northern part of the island remained under a flash-flood warning Monday afternoon and early evening, according to the National Weather Service. Most of the rest of the island was under a flash-flood watch set to expire at 6 this morning.
