Roselyn Shimaoka scored 10 points as Kaiser held on for a 51-48 win over Farrington on Friday night at Richard Kitamura gym.
Kaiser improved to 4-3 in OIA East play and caught Farrington (4-3) in the standings. The Lady Cougars have come a long way since going 0-6 in a rugged preseason schedule.
"We’re young, but we’re playing more together now. I’m happy about this game," Shimaoka said. "We knew their bigs were going to dominate inside. We tried to take that away and make them shoot. They started hitting some 3s, but we still tried to defend the bigs."
A crowd of about 200 — nearly half clad in bright yellow Cougars T-shirts — saw the visitors pull away in the second quarter. Kaiser led 29-21 at the half and extended the lead to 40-29 after a mid-range jumper from the wing by Skye Keao to start the fourth quarter.
Kaiser sat in a 2-3 zone, packing the paint and smothering Farrington’s dangerous post scorers Jeneva Toilolo and Penina Faumui. Though the Lady Governors finished with eight 3-pointers, they often hesitated to pull the trigger.
They did enough in the final three minutes to make it interesting. Senior Nani Cabato-Macado sank a trey from the right corner to bring Farrington within eight at 47-39, and after Faumui hit a follow shot, the Govs were within seven points with 43 seconds left.
Using a fullcourt press for the first time, the Govs got a steal by Faumui, who fed Cabato-Macado in the left corner for her fourth 3-pointer of the night. The Govs trailed 48-44 and got the ball back after Kaiser’s Kiana Matsumoto missed a 1-and-1 with 24 ticks left, but came up empty on the next trip down court.
Shimaoka sank two foul shots with 10.6 seconds left for a 51-45 lead.
Farrington’s Arabelle Dela Cruz hit a 3 at the buzzer for the final margin.
Brooke Ho, Kaiser’s tall center, added eight points, and Chantelle Arce had eight in their balanced attack.
Cabato-Macado scored all 12 of her points on treys to lead Farrington. Faumui tallied nine points, and Toilolo finished with seven but was just 3-for-9 at the foul line. Toilolo, an athletic 6-footer, already has a scholarship offer from the University of Hawaii, according to Govs coach Steven Leopoldo.
"We’ve got a lot more work to do. We didn’t show up to play in the first half," Leopoldo said. "My philosophy is to go inside-out. I can tell them to shoot, shoot, shoot, but they’re not comfortable with their shot yet. It’s back to the drawing board and keep working on playing defense, boxing out."
The Govs looked especially tough out of their fullcourt press, but Leopoldo isn’t certain he has enough depth to use it for more than a few minutes at a time.
