Kaneohe residents were stunned Saturday morning to find a woman lying in their street after her motorcycle hit a parked car.
Police said the 27-year-old Kaneohe woman was critically injured in the accident, but was responsive after being taken to the Queen’s Medical Center.
Lt. Robert Towne said the woman was coming around the curve of Kahuhipa Street when the motorcycle struck a silver Chrysler Sebring.
Police said the motorcyclist was thrown after sideswiping the car.
She slid on the pavement before ending up under the rear portion of a parked white Toyota truck, police said.
Police said the motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered numerous bruises and cuts.
The 2003 Suzuki GSX motorcycle continued to slide forward and ended up a few houses away.
Nancy Vaughn, 61, said she heard a loud crash that she thought was a car accident.
"It was shocking," Vaughn said. "I came running out, and there’s a body lying under the truck."
Vaughn recalled, "I asked, ‘Are you OK?’ but there was no response, no movement."
She found the woman’s cellphone wedged under a rear tire.
Emergency Medical Services responded to the 11:18 a.m. call at 46-305 Kahuhipa St., and transported the woman to a trauma center in critical condition.
Vaughn said it took about 15 to 20 minutes for first responders to carefully pull the woman out, place her on a stretcher and stabilize her.
The accident occurred on the mauka side of Kahuhipa above Kahekili Highway on a stretch fronting single-family houses.
Burgundy Colburn, 38, who has lived 26 years at 46-310 Kahuhipa St., said her family has had two cars hit in the same spot where the silver car was parked.
"This is really a dangerous turn," she said.
Drivers heading mauka on the street often cross over the yellow center line, so the motorcyclist going makai may have swerved right to avoid a car, she said.
"Neighbors say they always see her riding up and down, and she never speeds," she said.
Keith Souza, 68, and his wife, Bunnie, 57, said the roadway is heavily used and a lot of drivers do speed.
Police said it is unknown whether excessive speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
