Man is critically hurt in Pearl City crash
A collision between two cars at the intersection of Waimano Home and Moanalua roads in Pearl City sent a man in his 50s or 60s to the hospital in critical condition Monday, according to an Emergency Medical Services report.
Three other people in the cars, two 17-year-old girls and a 47-year-old woman, were in stable condition following the crash at about 1 p.m.
Police shut down Waimano Home Road in the southbound direction at Kuala Road, Kuala Road eastbound, and Moanalua Road westbound until Traffic Division officers completed their investigation of the scene at about 4 p.m.
The intersection fronts Manana Community Park.
Blunt force trauma killed pedestrian
A Makiki woman died of a blunt force trauma as a result of a motor vehicle accident, the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said Monday.
Edna Funayama, 68, died Friday in Makiki.
She was Oahu’s first traffic death of the new year.
Funayama was crossing Wilder Avenue at 12:41 p.m. fronting St. Clement’s Episcopal Church when she was hit by a white 2005 Ford Explorer driven by a 71-year-old Kailua woman. Police said the vehicle hit Funayama as the driver was making a left turn onto Wilder.
Funayama was in a crosswalk. Excessive speed and alcohol were not suspected as factors, police said.
Collision with vehicle injures moped rider
A moped rider was seriously injured in a collision with an automobile Monday afternoon.
The accident occurred at the intersection of South King and Keeaumoku streets at about 2:15 p.m., according to Emergency Medical Services officials.
The victim on the moped, a 38-year-old male, was not wearing a helmet. No further information was available.
Suspect arrested in wrong-way accident
A 37-year-old Ewa Beach man was arrested Sunday for driving the wrong way on the H-2 freeway, hitting a truck head-on and seriously injuring the driver 14 months ago.
The suspect was arrested on two counts of first-degree negligent injury, driving with a suspended license and hitting the truck, a Mazda pickup.
On Nov. 8, 2012, the suspect drove a Toyota Sequoia SUV south in a northbound lane of the freeway, about a mile south of the Meheula Parkway overpass, police said. The suspect’s vehicle hit the pickup truck, traveling north.
A 44-year-old Waipahu man, who was driving the Mazda pickup, was pinned in the cab and taken to the hospital in critical condition. The suspect sustained minor injuries.
Burglars hit UH faculty housing in Manoa
Police are investigating a burglary at the University of Hawaii’s Kauiokahaloa Iki faculty housing complex near Manoa Marketplace.
According to UH Campus Security, entry was made through a window, and cash and personal items were taken. The incident was reported at 3:39 p.m. Sunday.
The incident is the latest in a rash of break-ins at UH-Manoa facilities along Woodlawn Drive.
Homeless man who drowned is identified
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office has identified the 71-year-old homeless man who drowned after falling into Nuuanu Stream in Chinatown in October as Edward Chavez.
Witnesses told police that the man fell into the stream near River and Pauahi streets on Oct. 9. The case has been classified as accidental death due to drowning.
Firefighters and police pulled the man from the stream, and he later became unresponsive and was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said.
Chavez’s identity was released Monday.
Body of missing fisherman found on Hawaii isle
Hawaii County fire rescue personnel have recovered the body of a fisherman missing since Saturday.
The body was found floating face down about 15 yards offshore near the mouth of the Wailuku River and Hilo Bay around 3:45 p.m. Monday and recovered by rescue boat personnel.
The man, 34, was last seen tripping and falling into the Wailuku River behind the Hilo Army National Guard armory around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Firefighters conducted land, air and sea searches past sunset Saturday and all day Sunday before suspending operations due to darkness.
The man has not been identified.
2 fires fought in 4-day span at same house
Police and fire investigators are looking into what caused fires to break out twice in four days at the same house in Paukukalo, Maui.
The first fire broke out at about 8:37 p.m. Friday at the home at 590 Kailana Place.
Crews from Wailuku and Kahului responded, arriving at 8:46 p.m., and found a quarter of the second floor in flames. They extinguished the fire at 9:29 p.m.
Six adults live at the house, but only one was home at the time of the fire. He escaped without injury.
All have since been staying with relatives.
The second fire broke out at 1:44 p.m. Monday.
When firefighters from Kahului, Wailuku and Kihei arrived, they again found a fire on the second floor. Crews contained the fire and brought it under control at 1:58 p.m.
No damage estimates or causes were immediately available.
