Sophomore Lexi Delovio scored 10 of her 12 points in the fourth quarter as Maryknoll fought off ‘Iolani 42-33 on Wednesday night at Clarence T.C. Ching Gymnasium.
"Coach said we have to make better decisions. We didn’t make good decisions as a team," Delovio said, referring to ‘Iolani’s second-half rally — spurred by its fullcourt press.
No. 2 Maryknoll remained unbeaten in ILH play at 5-0 (14-1 overall) despite a late charge by the visiting Raiders (9-6, 2-3). Led by freshman Camy Aguinaldo (10 points), coach Dean Young’s squad rallied from an 11-point deficit to within 29-27 on a running bank shot by Klein Masutani with 4:47 left.
Delovio, a 5-foot-7 guard, drove for a pull-up jumper on the fastbreak. After she hit two foul shots moments later, the Spartans’ lead was six with 2:50 to go.
Brooke Maeda made two foul shots to bring ‘Iolani within 33-29 with 2:10 left, but Maia Laboy scored on an inbounds play and Delovio scored on another jumper for an eight-point lead.
Free throws by Lindsey Lee, Laboy and Delovio extended the lead in the final minute.
Poor long-range shooting did the Raiders in: 1-for-18 from the 3-point arc. Maeda chipped in seven points, but Jade Botelho, who was a post-up scorer last season, finished with just one point.
The Spartans may have felt the pressure of an early-season showdown. They shot just 44 percent from the free-throw line (12-for-27), including a combined 4-for-16 by their key low-post scorers, Laboy and Maegan Martin (eight points, five boards).
"Sometimes we get too excited, we try to make too great of a play instead of playing within ourselves," Maryknoll coach Chico Furtado said. "And we shot a horrendous percentage from the line. But I tell you what, for them to cut it to 2, and us to keep our composure, Lexi made some great plays down the stretch. Maia was tough under the bucket."
Tough halfcourt man defense was the ultimate weapon for Maryknoll. In their previous game, the Raiders sank nine treys against Kamehameha.
"We defended the 3-point line well. If we can do a better job taking care of the ball and making free throws, it’s not that close," Furtado said.
