Ranked tennis players in Challenger
Sunday’s winner of the Royal Lahaina Challenger Wild Card Tournament will get a spot in the main draw of the $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit event, which begins Jan. 21 on Maui.
Top seed in the Wild Card is Hawaii Pacific All-American Petr Michnev. The second seed at the bottom of the 32-man draw is Rong Ma, who played for Brigham Young-Hawaii.
Others include state high school champs Chas Okamoto, Marcel Chan and Kawika Lam. University of Hawaii senior Jonathan Brooklyn is seeded third.
Matches are all weekend at Oahu Club, with the final scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Challenger has a 32-man qualifier Jan. 19-20 at Royal Lahaina, with the top four moving to the main draw. The championship final starts at 11 a.m. Jan. 27. It will be streamed live at procircuit.usta.com.
Four players ranked in the world’s top 100 will be at the Challenger, including Americans Donald Young and Bradley Klahn. Former HPU All-Americans Jan Tribler and Mika Maatta earned a place in the Challenger’s doubles main draw by capturing Hawaii’s 2013 Triple Crown of Tennis.
This is the 35th year of the Pro Circuit, the largest developmental tennis circuit in the world. Royal Lahaina is one of 87 events, offering $3 million in prize money.
Point Loma defeats BYUH
Point Loma defeated the Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s basketball team 69-58 at Cannon Activities Center on Friday.
Danna Lynn Hooper led BYU-Hawaii with 17 points, followed by Talyn Bevell with 11 points and two steals.
The Seasiders (0-11, 0-6) rallied from a 14-point deficit to take a 49-48 lead in the second half, but Point Loma (7-6, 5-4) closed out the win.
