When the Kamehameha Warriors call her number, Alohi Robins-Hardy answers to anything from 1 to 5.
Playing center on defense and point guard on offense down the stretch, the 6-foot-2 senior scored 14 points, corralled 19 rebounds, made three steals and dished out five assists as No. 6 Kamehameha stifled No. 3 Maryknoll 50-35 on Tuesday night at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium.
“Alohi just tore us up. She played the way she should be playing all the time,” Maryknoll coach Chico Furtado said of the BYU-bound, two-sport standout. “She played within herself, didn’t force shots, got to the bucket, when we missed shots, there weren’t a whole lot of offensive rebounds.”
Robins-Hardy’s value as a primary ballhandler in the closing minutes was key. With a 41-33 lead and 4:52 to play, the Warriors spread the court. Coach Darold Imanaka kept Robins-Hardy at point guard, but flanked her with teammates Kea Ryder and Breann Nueku to kill the clock. Kamehameha closed the game out with a 9-2 run.
“It’s tiring, but you’ve got to pull through and play for the team,” Robins-Hardy said. “Coach told us to just relax and take care of the ball.”
Kamehameha improved to 5-2 in ILH play (11-3 overall), handling Maryknoll’s constant man-to-man pressure. The Warriors are 3-1 since a season-ending injury to point guard Tiare Kanoa, who was on the bench cheering her teammates on.
“We tried to take advantage of that and pressure their guards a little bit, but my team was never really into it,” Furtado said.
Maryknoll fell into a tie with Kamehameha at 5-2 (14-3 overall). Struggles at the foul line (8-for-19) didn’t help, but the Spartans just never got into a flow as the Warriors put up a battle on every front.
“Everybody stepped up,” Imanaka said. “Our coaching staff did a great job scouting.”
That defensive awareness paid off. Maryknoll’s perimeter shooters were contested most of the night and finished 4-for-21 from the 3-point arc.
Makana Aleki provided the force inside with nine points, five boards and two blocks despite a sore ankle and a sore Achilles’ heel.
“We had to play hard and play with heart,” Aleki said.
Ryder (five assists), Nueku and Cassidy Keola chipped in nicely with six points apiece. But the difference in a battle between two tough-nosed, defense-first squads was Robins-Hardy.
She set the tone with four assists in the first quarter. Her feed to Aleki for a low-post bucket gave the home team a 14-5 lead late in the opening stanza.
