Ikaika Phillip scored 12 points and No. 3 ‘Iolani used an 11-0 third-quarter run to upset No. 1 Punahou 46-34 on Wednesday night at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.
Phillip was 6-for-6 at the free-throw line and grabbed eight rebounds for the Raiders, who bounced back from a loss to Maryknoll over the weekend.
Zach Buscher added nine points, nine rebounds and four assists for ‘Iolani, which improved to 3-1 in ILH play (13-5 overall).
"We made more plays in this game," the 6-foot-3 guard said. "This is pretty big. If we lose this game, we’re 2-2 and clawing back the rest of the regular season. Now we’ve got Saint Louis next and we can’t look past them. The ILH is tough, man."

The Raiders did the rest of the ILH a big favor by handing Punahou its first loss. The Buffanblu were
18-0 coming into the game, but dropped to 3-1 in league play.

"We stopped them from getting easy opportunities. That wasn’t the case against Maryknoll," Raiders coach Dean Shimamoto said. "We wanted to be aware of where J.B. (Kam) was. He started that (fourth-quarter) run with a 3 and a hand in his face. We did a good job of getting back. We did a good job of knowing where their shooters were and closing out on the rest of their shooters."
It was a somber start on Wednesday after 6-foot-7 standout Daniel Andrews went down with a knee injury during warmups. Andrews, one of the top players in the state, had been healthy through his career. His loss had a big impact on Punahou, which already had Davis Miyashiro-Saipa’ia (all-star game on the mainland) and Ronley Lakalaka (foot) out of the lineup.
"Daniel got injured about four minutes before the game," Punahou coach Darren Matsuda said. "He did something to his knee before layups. It’s kind of a freak thing. Hopefully, it’s not serious. He’s walking around on it right now, but he can’t bend it. He’s critical for us, especially against ‘Iolani. We had some guys playing out of position."
Shimamoto was well aware of Andrews’ impact.
"He’s tall, he can hit 3s, finish dump-offs. He affects things on the defensive end, and I think the big part is, they didn’t get to prepare to not have him. If they had prepared the whole week without him, I think it would’ve been a different game. He’s a tough player. You don’t wish anything like that on anyone," he said.
The Raiders came prepared to play their best defensive game of the season. Their man-to-man defense limited Punahou to 26 percent shooting (12-for-47).
Blake Wade, a 6-foot-4 junior, had a game-high 10 rebounds for Punahou. Sharpshooter J.B. Kam was limited to seven points, including just one 3-point field goal. In all, Punahou was just 5-for-21 from the arc (24 percent) en route to its lowest scoring output of the season.
Hugh Hogland, ‘Iolani’s 6-7 freshman, was a major factor in the paint. He clogged the middle and finished with three of his team’s four blocked shots.
"He’s going to be very good. He used his body inside very well," Matsuda said.
The Raiders outrebounded the Buffanblu 32-27. Losing Andrews may have disrupted the Buffanblu more deeply than they expected. They also shot just 5-for-13 at the foul line. ‘Iolani was 17-for-22 (77 percent).
The visitors opened a 12-4 lead late in the first quarter after Hogland hit a putback, and when he powered inside for a tough basket at the buzzer, ‘Iolani had a 14-6 lead entering the second stanza.
Punahou woke up in the second quarter, getting 3-pointers from Chris Kobayashi, Dayson Watanabe and Micah Ma’a to close the gap. After Kam hit two foul shots, Punahou trailed 22-21 late in the first half.
Buscher answered with two foul shots to give ‘Iolani a 24-21 halftime lead, and then the Raiders outscored Punahou 11-0 in the third quarter. The Buffanblu shot 0-for-15 in that stanza, mostly on decent looks, but couldn’t get to the line much.
‘Iolani didn’t mess around, using its motion offense to chew off nearly two minutes to start the fourth quarter. Punahou’s fullcourt press finally wore down the visitors some. Kam hit an NBA-range trey and Kanawai Noa hit a midrange jumper on the fast break as the Buffanblu pulled within 35-27.
‘Iolani responded by holding Punahou scoreless for the next two minutes. After Erik Yamada sank two foul shots, the Raiders led 40-27 with 3:05 remaining. Punahou got no closer than nine the rest of the way.
"There are adversities we have to face. I thought we played hard, but we got in a bad slump in the third quarter," Matsuda said. "We’ll see how we bounce back."
