Bicyclist, 58, killed on Big Island highway
A 58-year-old bicyclist died Saturday morning after he was struck by a semitruck near Hilo, Hawaii County police said.
The crash happened about 8:45 a.m. on Mamalahoa Highway between Hau Lane and Pukihae Street, just north of Hilo.
Witnesses reported the cyclist hit the sidewalk curb and fell, then was struck by the truck, said Sgt. Christopher Gali of the police department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit. The cyclist and truck were both traveling toward Hilo.
The cyclist died at the scene. The truck’s driver, a 66-year-old Hilo man, was not hurt.
Police opened a first-degree negligent homicide investigation. Police closed Mamalahoa Highway in both directions for about four hours while they investigated.
Speeding suspected in fatal moped crash
Police say excessive speed may have been a factor in a fatal moped crash Friday in Wahiawa.
The crash happened about 6:50 p.m. near Kilani Avenue and Mala Street.
Police said a 21-year-old man riding the moped was taken in critical condition to Wahiawa General Hospital after his moped collided with a 1996 Ford pickup. The man died at the hospital. A 21-year-old woman who was driving the pickup was unhurt.
This is the fifth traffic fatality this year, the same number at this time last year.
Man identified in fatal fall from Kalihi roof
The Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the 20-year-old man who died after he fell about 35 feet through a roof in Kalihi as Harlan Lopes of Waimanalo.
An autopsy will be done today.
Emergency Medical Services paramedics responded to 1919 Hau St. at 1:55 p.m. Thursday and found the victim dead at the scene.
Blaze destroys Mililani home, injures man
Firefighters took quick action to contain a rapidly spreading fire that ravaged a single-family home in Mililani on Saturday evening.
The blaze was first reported at 8:48 p.m. Arriving firefighters saw flames that had engulfed about half of the wooden structure and initiated a "rapid attack," according to Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig.
The fire was brought under control by 9:11 p.m.
A male occupant of the home suffered second-degree burns to his hands, legs and face, according to Emergency Medical Services transmissions.
