Hawaiian sovereignty is forum’s subject
The first in a yearlong series of televised forums on Hawaiian sovereignty will be held Tuesday in Kapolei.
Called “The Sovereignty Conversation — Community Forums,” the series is an outreach effort to build public awareness of Hawaiian sovereignty issues. The series comes at a time when the Hawaiian community has established a large presence in Kapolei and the Legislature is preparing to introduce initiatives aimed at Hawaiian self-determination, a news release said.
The Hawaiian Affairs Committee of the Makakilo-Kapolei-HonokaiHale Neighborhood Board is hosting the forum.
The forum will be from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Kapolei High School Cafeteria at 91-5007 Kapolei Parkway and will be broadcast live on ‘Olelo Community Media.
5 ironwood trees slated for removal
A contractor will remove five decaying ironwood trees near the Kapiolani Park Bandstand on Tuesday.
Municipal arborists from the city’s Division of Urban Forestry have noted a decline in the trees’ health for several years.
The city says the trees are “severely decayed” and that removal is necessary because of the threat of the trees falling over or large branches falling. New ironwood trees will be planted in the same locations.
Many of the trees are more than 100 years old.
In 1890, Archibald Cleghorn, father of Princess Kaiulani, planted about 250 trees in the park, including the trees that line the former carriage path through the park.
Camper saved after SOS alert
An SOS scrawled in the sand led a rescue crew to a woman who injured her calf while camping on Kauai.
A pilot with Mauna Loa Helicopters called police at about 3 p.m. Saturday when he saw the message and a red flag at Kalalau Beach.
The Air-1 helicopter with a rescue crew on board landed on the beach, where people informed them that the injured woman was above the big pools about two miles from the beach, Kauai County said by email.
The crew returned to the air and began searching for the victim. Someone waved them down and told them that she was about 100 feet above the stream, the county statement said.
A crew member put the woman in an air-rescue vest, and the helicopter lifted them out to a landing zone. Medics took the woman to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital for treatment.
It was unclear who drew the SOS.
Earlier Saturday a 26-year-old Lawai man was airlifted from Camp One Bay in Hanapepe after he fell from the parking lot Friday night.
A fisherman found the victim lying on the rocks at about 7:40 a.m. and called for help. The man was taken to Veterans Memorial with unspecified injuries.
Hiker rescued at Maui cliffs
Maui fire rescue personnel Saturday rescued a 60-year-old woman who broke her ankle while hiking down the Peahi cliffs near the “Jaws” surf spot lookout.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 12:41 p.m. They stabilized the woman and airlifted her to a landing zone near Hana Highway.
She was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
