At Kailua, the girls basketball team’s T-shirt says it all: never turn your back on the wave.
The Surfriders are still riding a big one, indeed, after a hard-earned 66-56 win over Waianae on Tuesday night. Delcie Williams scored 22 points and point guard Tara Takata scored all 11 of her points from the free-throw line as Kailua advanced to the second round of the OIA Red playoffs.
Williams hustled for 11 rebounds and six steals, consistently running the floor as Takara found her filling the lanes. Patria Vaimoana anchored the low post for Kailua and finished with eight points and seven rebounds. The junior was on the team two years ago when Kailua’s season ended with a playoff loss at Waianae.
"We had to push ourselves and not give up. Waianae was aggressive," Vaimoana said. "It was tough when we played them (in 2012). We kind of gave up. We weren’t ready. This year is a lot different."
Waianae closed OIA play with a 5-6 record. Kailua, now 8-3 in league play (11-5 overall) will play West runner-up Leilehua tonight at Mililani’s gym.
"It wasn’t how I wanted to see us play, but we put the ball in Tara’s hands and she does what she needs to do to make good decisions," Kailua coach Mandy Llamedo said. "I know Leilehua shoots the 3s and they’re defending champions. They’re playing much better now than when I saw them early in preseason, but if we come out and play with confidence, and finish and execute, we can come away with a win."
Free-throw shooting was crucial. Kailua shot 24-for-38 at the line (63 percent) and Waianae was just 8-for-24 (33 percent).
Kailua came into the tournament as the No. 3 team in the East. Waianae came in as the sixth-place team from the West, but proved to be dangerous despite its woes at the charity stripe.
"We had it, but it got away from us at the end," Waianae coach Cyrilla Manuel said. "Our girls gave their 110 percent, trying to make something happen. I’m glad we at least got this far. Kailua, they’re good. They hustle and they played good defense."
The visitors rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half, thanks to a scrappy fullcourt press. A follow shot by Asenati Cook, a recent call-up from the JV team, brought the Seariders within 53-51.
After Tayhila-Lee Chong hit a free throw with 2:52 remaining, Waianae was within 53-52.
From there, Waianae’s turnovers allowed Kailua to finish strong with a 13-4 run.
It was a physical battle — four Seariders fouled out — with a sometimes frantic tempo. Takata was the stabilizing factor at the point. The sophomore finished with four assists and two steals, but was key against Waianae’s swarming press.
"We just had to come in with the mentality of working together as a team, and that’s what helped us succeed," Takata said.
Now the Surfriders are one win away from qualifying for the state tourney.
"I’m not surprised. I knew when we bonded as a team in preseason, we could go far. As long as we don’t play with that timidness," Takata added.
Berlin Johnson led Waianae with 16 points, including three first-half 3-point bombs. Chong, who battled hard against Takata all night, tallied 11 points, four rebounds and five steals. Dessirrei Sivia added nine points and eight rebounds.
