It wasn’t pretty, but the Mililani Trojans will take it.

After a long layoff, No. 3 Mililani got a gritty effort from seniors Mikaela Limper and Sarah Liva for a 54-36 win over Radford on Wednesday.

Mililani advanced to the OIA Red girls basketball semifinal round and clinched a state-tournament berth. The Trojans will meet Moanalua on Saturday at Radford’s James Alegre Gymnasium.

Limper hustled for 17 points, five assists and two steals as the Trojans (19-2) overcame a slow start. The veteran guard also had her mother, Vicki, on her mind. Vicki normally attends every game, but is in the hospital for a few more days.

"She’s never missed a game, so it was pretty hard. She’s fine. She’s pretty sick, but she’ll be fine," Limper said. "I went to see her before the game. She’s stubborn, so she told me to focus on the game."

Liva, a 6-foot-1 senior center, had 10 points, 17 rebounds and four steals to power Mililani’s interior game. She was upset with herself after the game, walking out of the locker room in tears before her friends and family warmed her up.

"It shows what kind of character she’s got. She feels like she didn’t play her best," Trojans coach Patrick Basilio said. "That’s the thing I like about these girls. They set lofty expectations, but they work to try and achieve them. Radford matched up pretty well with us. Their bigs are their strength, and playing them a third time is tough. Our guard play was a little stronger, but we’ve got a lot of stuff to clean up."

Radford’s state-tourney hopes are still alive. The Rams will visit Nanakuli on Friday in consolation play. The winner will clinch a state-tourney berth.

"The girls wanted this one real bad," coach Brandy Richardson said. "Chipping away against a good team is hard, but the girls stuck together. That’s all you can ask for."

The Trojans were anything but dominating in the first quarter, though, clinging to a 10-8 lead. By the second quarter, Mililani’s sticky fullcourt man-to-man defense locked down. Radford committed seven turnovers as the home team went on a 19-7 run. Limper hit her first 3 of the game and Liva took control with six points and six boards in the quarter.

The Rams scored the first six points of the third quarter, getting a three-point play by Jasmine Moody (18 points) and a trey from Deja Tavale (12 points). That brought the visitors within 29-21, but Mililani responded with an 8-0 run to end the quarter.

The Rams fell behind by 18 early in the fourth before going on an 8-0 run. Sydnee Wynn’s layup cut it to 39-29, but the Rams got no closer.

Sophomore Shantel Appleby played a big role for Mililani with 14 points, nine rebounds and two steals.

Ciera O’Brien made the game-winning jumper with 1.2 seconds remaining to lift Na Menehune over the Golden Hawks. Nanakuli was fouled on the next play, but only made the front end of an 1-and-1. Lachae McColor, who led Moanalua with 12 points, rebounded the missed free throw. Jazmina Iafitaga also scored 12 points in the win.
