The Hawaii Rainbow Wahine will hit the road with style.
UH dazzled UC Irvine with a spectacular offensive outburst on Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center and won its fourth straight game, 85-59, heading into a four-game mainland trip.
The season-high scoring output sent scribes into record books to scour for recent (and not-so-recent) program benchmarks.
A 26-point margin of victory was the largest for UH (10-7, 4-1 Big West) since a 35-point blowout of North Carolina Central in November 2010, and the four-game streak is the longest since the 2006-07 edition won eight in a row.
Five Wahine players scored in double figures, the first time that happened since a defeat of Denver in 2011. Two of those players, Ashleigh Karaitiana and Pua Kailiawa, came off the bench.
"That balance was awesome," said senior wing Shawna Kuehu, who led the way with 18 points, including two rare 3-pointers. "That makes it harder for the other teams to guard us, because our depth on the bench is amazing. To have people step off and contribute that amount of points that they do … how do you guard that?"
Second-year coach Laura Beeman got excellent bench production for the second straight night as her reserves outscored UCI’s 28-13. The Wahine steamrolled the Anteaters in the paint, 50-22, leading to 52.2 percent shooting from the field to UCI’s 33.3 percent.
Senior forward Kamilah Jackson (12 points, seven boards) held UCI forward Camille Buckley to 19 points and eight rebounds after Buckley went for 31 points and 21 boards in a win at Cal State Northridge on Thursday.
"The great thing is, it’s not a fluke, and I think the girls know that," Beeman said. "We can play like this consistently. Even in a bad night, we don’t need five players in double figures to win. We get a couple, we can win. So, we still need to work some execution when we get funky lineups, but that’s kind of what we’ve been doing in practice, and it seems to be working pretty well for us."
A crowd of 650 was on hand to see the Wahine seize control after a brief four-point lead by the Anteaters (9-10, 2-3). UH couldn’t be stopped from there, leading 48-29 at halftime and never allowing the margin to shrink to less than 15 in the second half.
Kailiawa had the signature play of the game for the second time this week after the center’s nifty no-look bounce pass to Diane Moore in a rout of UC Davis on Thursday.
This time, Kailiawa dived to save a seemingly lost ball from going out of bounds under UH’s basket midway through the second half. There was no whistle, though, and Kuehu collected it and fired it upcourt on a perfect bounce pass to Destiny King, who laid it up in stride for a 20-point lead.
Kailiawa, a senior, put in a season high in points (11) for the second straight game. She added a career-best seven rebounds in 21 minutes.
"It’s a hustle play," Kailiawa said. "Coach said, even if the ball goes out of bounds, if it’s on the floor, dive. Might as well just try anyway."
UH will remain on the road for the entirety of its four-game, two-week trip, which begins at Long Beach State on Thursday.
