Bailey reaches Chaminade milestone
Chaminade junior guard Lee Bailey became the 13th Silverswords men’s basketball player — and first since Zach Whiting in 2007 — to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
He went into Saturday’s game at Dominican needing four points to reach the mark and did so when he two shots in the opening 5:41.
Bailey finished with 22 points in an 84-83 overtime loss to the Penguins that snapped Chaminade’s seven-game winning streak.
With 1,018 points, Bailey ranks 11th on the Silverswords’ all-time scoring list and needs 54 points to pass Darnell Clavon (1996-98) as No. 10. Richard Haenisch (1980-84) tops the program’s list with 2,098 points.
Vulcans host Coaches vs. Cancer game
The Hawaii Hilo men’s basketball game Thursday against No. 12 Cal Baptist is the team’s designated Coaches vs. Cancer contest. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m. at the UHH gym. The event is a fundraiser and awareness program for the American Cancer Society.
BYUH’s Friel earns weekly honor
Brigham Young-Hawaii sophomore guard Scott Friel was named the PacWest Player of the Week in men’s basketball after helping the Seasiders go 2-1 on the road last week.
Friel averaged 20.3 points and 12 rebounds, including double-doubles at Holy Names (20 points, 13 rebounds) and Academy of Art (23 points, 15 rebounds).
MEN’S HONORABLE MENTION
Pablo Coro, BYUH: The junior guard averaged 16.7 points and 5.7 assists as the Seasiders went 2-1 on the road. He was 18-for-21 from the line, with eight of his 15 made free throws coming in overtime against Academy of Art. He finished with a game-high 26 points against AAU.
WOMEN’S HONORABLE MENTION
Skye Savini, HPU: The senior guard averaged 18 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.3 steals as the Sea Warriors went 2-1 on the road. She had 27 points with five steals in the win at Notre Dame de Namur.
Bry Tatupu-Leopoldo, BYUH: The junior guard out of Farrington averaged 22 points during a 1-2 week on the road for the Seasiders. She scored a career-high 29 points in the 74-70 loss at Notre Dame de Namur. She hit 11-for-17 3-point attempts in the three games.
BASEBALL
HPU, Hawaii Hilo to meet alumni
Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii Hilo open their respective baseball seasons with alumni games on Saturday.
The Sea Warriors’ game is noon at Hans L’Orange Park. HPU shared the No. 3 spot in the PacWest coaches preseason poll, with sophomore shortstop Tyler Tokunaga named to the preseason all-conference team.
The Vulcans begin their first season under Kallen Miyataki with a 2 p.m. game at Wong Stadium. Hilo was picked eighth out of nine teams in the preseason poll.
TENNIS
Vulcans scholarship fundraiser set
Hawaii Hilo hosts a benefit fundraiser for the Richard and Ruth Matsuura Vulcan Tennis Endowed Scholarship on Feb. 8 at Waterfalling Estate in Ninole. The event runs from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The cost to attend is $25 ($20 tax deductible) and includes food, exhibition tennis matches and a tour of the estate.

SOCCER
Vulcans receive team ethics award
The Hawaii Hilo women’s soccer team was recognized for its sportsmanship with a Team Ethics Award of Merit by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The silver certificate is awarded annually to teams receiving no red cards and a maximum of five cards during the season. The Vulcans (10-4-2, 7-4-1 PacWest) had three yellow cards in 2013 under first-year coach Lance Thompson.
