Safeway’s Property Development Centers broke ground on Kauai Wednesday for the 22nd Safeway store in the islands and second on Kauai.
Safeway’s 56,000-square-foot store will be the anchor tenant at the 14.25-acre Hokulei Village shopping complex at the corner of Nuhou Road and Kaumualii Highway in Lihue. The complex will also have a Walgreens, a Petco, a Jack in the Box and a Chevron.
"Safeway has been a longtime corporate supporter of our community. They’re a wonderful partner," said Mayor Bernard Carvalho, who attended the groundbreaking.
Underground infrastructure will begin soon. Vertical construction should start this summer with the store opening in November.
