Moanalua guard Antoine Hines refused to let a busted shoe slow him down as Na Menehune chased down McKinley on Thursday night.
With the front of his sneaker sole flapping beneath him for much of the night, Hines scored 22 points, including a game-tying jumper with 47 seconds left in regulation, and Moanalua rallied to a 73-68 overtime win at McKinley’s gym.
Moanalua trailed by 11 at halftime and was down 10 with 2:50 left in the third quarter, but Hines and forward Aaron Stuart sparked the comeback. Stuart also finished with 22 points, the last two coming in overtime as Na Menehune (8-2) scored the first six points of the extra period to take command.
"We just tried to get stops. We weren’t stopping them all day," Hines said. "Then we got the ball in the paint a lot more in the second half. Aaron did a great job getting in the middle and getting layups and making plays for us."
Hines had the focus to knock down clutch shots in the second half despite the distraction under his feet.
"It was bugging me," said Hines, who finally had to tape up the front of his shoe in the fourth quarter. "I felt like I was about to slip the whole time."
The Tigers (5-5) had Na Menehune chasing them after putting together a 17-2 run in the first quarter. Macjun Otarra scored seven of his 11 first-half points during the spurt, and McKinley went into halftime with a 41-30 lead.
Stuart accounted for Moanalua’s first 10 points of the third quarter, and Hines later knocked down two 3-pointers as Na Menehune chopped into their deficit and went into the fourth quarter trailing 55-50.
"If we play it inside-out and give ourselves opportunities at the rim or kick-outs, we’re a much better offensive team," Moanalua coach Byron Mello said. "To their credit we made adjustments in the second half, so I’m really pleased with that."
Moanalua continued to chip away and closed to two points on four occasions in the fourth quarter. Nelson Pita answered twice for McKinley, and Otarra’s jumper with 2:29 left gave the Tigers a 64-60 lead.
But Hines drove in for a layup then tied it up with a free-throw-line jumper with 47 seconds left.
McKinley worked the clock down to set up a final shot, but the attempt rattled in and out just before the buzzer.
Karson Cruz gave Moanalua it’s first lead since midway through the first quarter with a putback, and Na Menehune scored the first five points of overtime.
McKinley went 3:08 into the extra period before Pita’s layup brought the Tigers to within four at 70-66. But Na Menehune hung on from the free-throw line.
