St. Francis Hospice will hold a conference titled "Caregiving and Grief … Awakening Heart and Soul" next month.
Slated for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 14 in the Koolau Ballrooms and Conference Center in Kaneohe, the event aims to help health care professionals, social workers, caregivers and others find meaning and wisdom in caring for someone with a terminal illness or in dealing with the death of a loved one, according to a news release. Topics will range from ways to support those dealing with loss to acquiring dignity in giving and receiving care, the release said.
Speakers will include:
» Ben Wolfe, a nationally recognized grief trainer and consultant. He recently retired as founder and director of St. Mary’s Medical Center’s Grief Support Center in Duluth, Minn., after 28 years. He is a past president of the Association for Death Education and Counseling.
» Frances Kakugawa, a former Hawaii resident, caregiver and teacher. Kakugawa is an award-winning poet and author of 11 books. She travels nationwide giving lectures, readings and workshops for caregivers, health professionals, educators and students.
» Ramsay R. Taum, founder and president of the Hawaii-based Life Enhancement Institute (LEI) of the Pacific, is a practitioner and instructor of several Native Hawaiian practices. For his advocacy of the spirit of aloha in the ecology, business, communications and economic development, he was named the 2013 Distinguished Peacemaker for Peace Day Hawaii.
