Tyra Moe sank a free throw with 4.1 seconds left to lift No. 2 Punahou over No. 5 Maryknoll 29-28 for the ILH girls basketball title.

Regular-season winner Punahou (13-2) claimed the ILH tournament title with the win, clinching the league championship. The Buffanblu also earned a first-round bye at the state tournament. 

"I took deep breaths, but mostly, my teammates supported me a lot," said Moe. 

Now the Buffanblu can reap the rewards. 

"It’s such a joy right now," Punahou coach Kevin Velasco said. "The kids will savor it tonight, and tomorrow (Saturday) we’ll get back to work."

Maryknoll (18-4) will await news from the HHSAA on its first-round pairing. 

Freshman guard Kamaile Kandiah led Punahou with 10 points. Keau Fey had a game-high 11 rebounds as Punahou outboarded Maryknoll 21-7. She also had two key blocks in the fourth quarter. 

"Give them credit, they made plays down the stretch, and free throws," Maryknoll coach Chico Furtado said. "I thought the second half was called a little ticky-tack compared to the first half. That got (Punahou) into the bonus real early. I don’t think the officials did a bad job, but defensively, we couldn’t do as much as we wanted to do." 

Cianna Ochoco paced Maryknoll with eight points. 

With a vocal home crowd of about 1,200 looking on, Punahou rallied behind its defense. Maryknoll led from the start, but never had more than a six-point lead. The Spartans had a 4-0 lead, sitting at midcourt with the ball for a large chunk of the opening quarter as Punahou mostly sat back in its 1-2-2 zone. They kept the lead through the second quarter, and Maia Laboy swished a trey from the left wing at the buzzer to give Maryknoll a 12-7 lead at the half. 

The Buffanblu finally tied the game with 1:57 to play on two free throws by Kandiah. Maryknoll went to Laboy, who drove the baseline, was fouled and then missed her two foul shots with 1:04 remaining. 

Punahou then worked the clock down to the final seconds and fed the ball to Fey on the low post. Her turnaround shot missed, but Moe hustled for the rebound and was fouled by Ochoco.

Kelly Kuchenbecker scored a game-high 19 points as the Bulldogs defeated the Royals for the league’s fourth spot into the state tournament.

Already clinching berths were Hawaii Baptist (league champion), Saint Francis and University.
