Rainbow Wahine water polo drops a pair
The No. 6 University of Hawaii water polo team lost both of its matches at the Stanford Invite on Saturday at Stanford, Calif.
The Rainbow Wahine lost to No. 5 UC Irvine 9-4 and to No. 2 Stanford 16-5. Paula Chillida Esforzado had two goals against Irvine and Danielle Lewis scored three goals against Stanford. Hawaii (2-2) plays two matches today.
Hawaii Pacific men beat Azusa Pacific
Justin Long scored 24 points off the bench to lead six players in double figures as the Hawaii Pacific men’s basketball team defeated Azusa Pacific 90-84 on Saturday in a Pacific West Conference game at Moanalua High School.
Malte Ziegenhagen scored 15 points, Leif Rodney scored 14, Colfax Nordquist had 12, Farbod Farman had 11, and Rema Lascelles added 10 for the Sea Warriors (12-6, 7-5). Troy Leaf led the Cougars (10-8, 6-6) with 25 points and Kevin Stafford scored 17 off the bench.
» Allison Greene scored 22 points and Kelly Hardeman added 17 to lead the Azusa Pacific women to an 82-76 win over Hawaii Pacific at Moanalua. Sendy Valles and Sullivan Ziegler scored 11 each for Azusa Pacific (13-5, 11-1). Morganne Comstock had 24 points and 13 rebounds for HPU (12-6, 8-4).
» Anthony Consention scored 14 points to lead the California Baptist men to an 84-78 win over Brigham Young-Hawaii in Laie. Michael Smith scored 12 points for California Baptist (18-1, 12-1). DeAndre Medlock led BYUH (10-9, 8-5) with 29 points.
» Cassidy Mihalko and Kamille Diaz scored 24 points each to help the California Baptist women to a 77-70 win at BYUH. Jasmine Sauser added 12 points for California Baptist (10-9, 8-5). Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo scored 20 points for BYUH (2-16, 2-11).
Western Washington sweeps BYUH softball
The Western Washington softball team swept a doubleheader from Brigham Young-Hawaii on Saturday at Sand Island Park. Jenna DeRosier threw a three-hitter in a 5-1 win and Aspen Ison pitched a one-hit shutout in a 6-0 victory.
Western Washington is 2-0 and BYUH is 0-2.
Story, Coolen headline Quarterback Club
Hawaii Tourism Authority sports manager Mike Story and Rainbow Wahine softball coach Bob Coolen will speak at Monday’s Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon.
Story will talk about last Sunday’s Pro Bowl and provide an update on the state’s negotiations with the NFL on the game.
He manages the HTA’s current sports event contracts and "Active Hawaii," which targets visitors interested in active travel and sports.
Coolen, starting his 23rd season as Wahine head coach, will preview the upcoming season, which starts Thursday with the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic.
Last year’s Big West champions return six starters, including senior catcher/left fielder Sharla Kleibenstein and all-conference selections Kayla Wartner, Leisha Li‘ili‘i, and Keiki Carlos.
The public is welcome to attend the luncheon, which starts at 11:30 a.m. at Maple Garden Restaurant located at 909 Isenberg St. The luncheon is $15 per person.
2 fundraisers for Goods-Fernandez
Two "Team Cia" events will be held this month to help former Hawaii volleyball and basketball player Cia Goods-Fernandez with medical expenses.
Former Rainbow Wahine basketball player Hedy Liu is flying in from San Diego to lead a Zumba Masterclass on Saturday at Lincoln Elementary School, located across from Roosevelt High. Tickets are $10 for the event that runs from 3 to 5 p.m.

Also, a fundraiser is scheduled for Feb. 23 at Pau Hana Lounge, 746 Kouhou St., from 3 to 9 p.m. A donation of $10 includes pupus and entertainment.
Goods-Fernandez, a mother of five (ages 3 to 13) played four volleyball seasons and one basketball season for Hawaii in the 1990s. She has been diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
