Wahiawa pool to reopen after pump fixed
The pool at Wahiawa District Park is closed because of a broken pump.
The city Department of Parks and Recreation said a maintenance crew discovered last week that the pool pump had failed and attempted to repair it, but determined that they need replacement parts from the mainland.
The pool will reopen as soon as the repair is done, the city said in a news release Thursday. No date was given.
The pool is normally open for lap swimming from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Thursday.
Free swimming is 2 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekends. A swim team practices in the pool on Fridays.
Missing man’s body discovered
The body of a man who was reported missing Friday has been found at Akaka Falls State Park on Hawaii island.
Jeffrey Reyes, 53, was last seen at the park at 8:49 a.m. Friday.
Police and a Hawaii County Fire Department ground crew searched the park Friday and Saturday, while the Air 1 helicopter searched the trail, surrounding forest and river. The park was closed to the public Saturday.
The search was called off at darkness Saturday and resumed Sunday morning.
Reyes’ body was found by divers at 11:50 a.m. Sunday in about 30 feet of water at the bottom of a pond about a quarter-mile downstream from the falls. Police are investigating the case.
Empty kayak’s owner is sought
The Coast Guard is asking the public’s help in identifying the owner of an unmanned kayak found adrift three miles northwest of Honolua Bay, Maui.
A cruise ship spotted the blue kayak adrift at about 10 p.m. Saturday.
While no one has been reported missing or in distress in the area, the Coast Guard conducted a search with a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to make sure that no one was in distress.
The Coast Guard advises the public to register and label all watercraft and equipment with contact information. Free "If Found" decals, which can be affixed to watercraft and equipment, are offered via the Coast Guard’s Operation Paddle Smart and are available from local harbor masters and the Coast Guard.
Anyone who can help identify the owner of the kayak is asked to call 842-2600.
