No. 14 Cal Baptist holds off HPU men
Ryan Berg scored 27 points, 15 coming on five 3-pointers, and 14th-ranked Cal Baptist held off a late charge by Hawaii Pacific for an 83-72 win Monday night at Blaisdell Arena.
The Lancers (19-1, 13-1) hit 30 of 33 free-throw attempts, with Berg a perfect 10-for-10, including six in a row in the final two minutes.
Justin Long scored 18 points and Malte Ziegenhegen added 17 before fouling out for the Sea Warriors (12-7, 7-6). HPU trailed 68-64 with 99 seconds left before being forced to foul.
» Kuany Kuany scored 23 points and James Harper came off the bench for 21, but it was not enough as Chaminade fell to Azusa Pacific 85-82 in double OT at McCabe Gym.
Reserve LyDell Cardwell led the Cougars (11-8, 7-6) with 23 points, going 9-for-12 from the field with four 3-pointers. Troy Leaf finished with 17 points, including a 3-pointer with 2:56 left in the second overtime that put APU ahead for good at 78-73.
With 1:11 left in regulation, Harper hit two free throws to give Chaminade (12-8, 9-3) a 60-58 lead. APU answered with a dunk by Sharif Watson to force overtime.
A 3-pointer by Chaminade’s Kiran Shastri with three seconds left in the first overtime sent it to a second.
Sea Warriors women edge Lancers
Shianne Solomon scored 19 points, and Morganne Comstock added 13 points and 17 rebounds to lead Hawaii Pacific to an 80-75 win over Cal Baptist on Monday at Blaisdell Arena.
Laken McClelland hit three 3-pointers en route to 18 points and Skye Savini added 13 points for the Sea Warriors (13-6, 9-4).
Erin Asher and Cassidy Mihalko each had 18 points for the Lancers (10-10, 8-6).
» At McCabe Gym, Azusa Pacific ended the first half on a 15-4 run to pull away from Chaminade for an 80-54 victory.
Lilia Maio scored 19 points, 14 in the first half, to lead the Silverswords (2-15, 2-9) in their first home appearance in nearly a month. Maio’s layup with 4:12 left before intermission put Chaminade ahead 24-23, but APU used a 15-4 spurt at the end of the half and opened the second with a 16-5 run to take control.
Sandy Valles finished with a game-high 22 points for the Cougars (14-5, 12-1), who moved into a first-place tie in the conference standings with Academy of Art.
Men’s honor roll
» Pablo Coro, BYUH: The junior guard averaged 14.5 points and 3.5 assists as the Seasiders went 1-1. He hit seven of BYUH’s school-record 17 3-pointers in a 105-82 win over Azusa Pacific, finishing with a career-high 23 points.
» Justin Long, HPU: The junior guard, out four games due to injury, helped the Sea Warriors snap a three-game losing streak by scoring 24 points in a win over Azusa Pacific, including hitting all four of his 3-point attempts.
Women’s honor roll
» Morganne Comstock, HPU: Dominated in the Sea Warriors’ lone game of the week, with 24 points and 13 rebounds in a loss to Azusa Pacific. She was 11-for-19 from the field, with four assists and two blocks.
» Bry Tatupu-Leopoldo, BYUH: The junior guard out of Farrington averaged 26 points and 7.5 rebounds in the Seasiders’ two losses. She had a PacWest-high 10 3-pointers for the week, including seven against Azusa Pacific when she finished with 32 points.
GOLF
Stacked field at Amer Ari Invitational
No. 2 Georgia Tech and No. 3 Oklahoma State headline the field for this week’s 24th Amer Ari Men’s Invitational golf tournament at the Waikoloa Kings’ Golf Course.
The 20-team field includes five other NCAA Division I Top 25 teams; Cal State Monterey Bay, No. 7 in NCAA D-II; and Osaka Gakuin of Japan. The Yellow Jackets and Cowboys have each won five previous titles.
The tourney, hosted by D-II Hawaii Hilo, begins with Wednesday’s practice round. The 54-hole event opens Thursday and runs through Saturday.
Also competing are No. 11 Stanford, No. 15 UCLA, No. 17 Texas, No. 18 Washington and No. 25 USC. Rounding out the D-I teams are Arizona State, Auburn, UC Davis, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Oregon State, TCU and Texas Tech.
Tennis
Vulcans scholarship fundraiser set
Hawaii Hilo hosts a benefit fundraiser for the Richard and Ruth Matsuura Vulcan Tennis Endowed Scholarship on Saturday at Waterfalling Estate in Ninole.
The event runs from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The cost is $25 ($20 tax deductible) and includes food, exhibition tennis matches and a tour of the estate.

BASEBALL
Preseason honors for HPU’s Tokunaga
Hawaii Pacific sophomore shortstop Tyler Tokunaga was named to the preseason All-West Region second team by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Tokunaga hit .376 with 37 runs scored in 40 games for the Sea Warriors last season.
HPU opens the regular season with a five-game series against Northwest Nazarene. The Seasiders and Crusaders meet in doubleheaders Friday and Saturday, with a single game Monday, all at Hans L’Orange Park.
