Tobita takes Junior Championship
Alyssa Tobita defeated Ashley Ishimura, 6-4, 6-1, Sunday to win the Girls 18 title at the Hawaii State Junior Championships. The match was a replay of the last state high school championship, which Tobita also won to give her three state titles going into her senior year at Mililani.
Zander Kim won the Boys 18 final, 8-2, over Gregory Zukeran. Kim also won doubles, playing with state high school singles champ Kawika Lam. They defeated Daisuke Nakayama and Grant Zukeran 6-0, 6-4.
The matches were played at sites around Oahu. Due to darkness and court time limits, some finals were reduced to playoff (first to eight) formats.
Players from Oahu, the Big Island, Maui, Guam, California, New York, Maryland and Virginia participated. There were 192 players in four age divisions.
All singles and doubles winners were from Oahu, with the exception of Girls 16 doubles champs Sarah Tsukamoto and Michelle Uyeda, both from Kailua Kona, and Girls 18 doubles champ Sarah Dvorak, from Kurtistown on Hawaii island. She played with Oahu’s Katie Kim.
