Assistant basketball coach Brandyn Akana will return to the University of Hawaii’s bench tonight after missing the past four games due to an undisclosed “personnel matter,” the school said.
Athletic director Ben Jay said Wednesday the situation involved “personnel actions” and has been in the hands of the school’s Office of Human Resources. Jay declined additional comment.
Head coach Gib Arnold said Akana’s absence was “absolutely nothing” and referred questions to Jay. When asked if Akana would be on the team’s bench for tonight’s game against UC Santa Barbara, Arnold affirmed he would be.
Akana is in his fourth season as a UH assistant after spending nine years at Brigham Young-Hawaii.
Akana is listed as the team’s recruiting coordinator but also works with guards, handles community relations and assists in scouting.
He is believed to have a salary of more than $80,000. UH officials said he was still being paid by the school.
Akana is normally on the team’s bench during games except when he’s away recruiting. Akana was not on the team’s bench the past two home games or the previous two road games. He returned to practice Wednesday.
