Opened on Sept. 26, 1985, Laie McDonald’s served its last burgers, fries, shakes and other familiar items Monday night.
"It’s a little sad to see the current location go, but we’re really excited about what’s to come," said Melanie Okazaki, McDonald’s of Hawaii regional marketing manager.
Plans call for the restaurant, at 55-400 Kamehameha Highway, to be relocated 200 yards north, to make room for a new 140-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel to replace the old 49-room Laie Inn, which was demolished in 2009.
The restaurant’s fewer than 50 employees all were offered transfers to the Haleiwa and Temple Valley stores, said Laie McDonald’s owner-operator Susan Smith.
Many of the restaurant’s staff have worked at the location for 18 or 19 years, she said.
Both the dine-in and drive-thru operations were to close at 10 p.m. Monday.
The restaurant’s distinctive interior was reflective of an old-style Polynesian longhouse and was part of the old Laie Inn complex, not a church as some have theorized, Smith said.
The new hotel is projected to open sometime in 2015, while no firm dates are available for groundbreaking or opening of the new McDonald’s.
