Hawaii’s Moore advances in Australia
Carissa Moore was one of five Hawaii surfers to advance out of their heats at the Hurley Australian Open on Thursday in Sydney. Moore, the reigning ASP world champion, posted the highest single-wave score of the event with a 9.60 out of a possible 10 in the fourth round. Hawaii’s Leila Hurst, Alessa Quizon, Nage Melamed and Malia Manuel also moved on.
Hawaii surfers who advanced into the men’s third round were Gavin Gillette, Mason Ho, Fred Patacchia and Joshua Moniz. Patacchia won his second-round heat with a score of 15.16.
Hilo softball splits with Cal Baptist
Rebecca Lee went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs to help Hawaii Hilo beat California Baptist 4-0 on Wednesday in the first game of a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader in Riverside, Calif. Lee also doubled and homered, and Ashley Nelson gave up seven hits and struck out seven in the win.
California Baptist beat Hilo 8-5 in the second game. Lee homered twice for Hilo (6-5, 1-1) in the loss. Kailey Willingham led the Lancers (9-2, 1-1) with two hits.
