Show details sharks’ place in isle culture
Learn all about sharks, known as mano in Hawaiian, and their role in Hawaiian culture.
The Livable Hawai‘i Kai Hui has produced a two-part show, "Maunalua: East Oahu Community Groups Working Together, Na Mano," with part one airing at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday and Feb. 26 on ‘Olelo. Local filmmaker Ann Marie Kirk interviews waterman Leighton Tseu about sharks and their role as aumakua (family gods) and their relevance today.
Tseu, a member of the Royal Order of Kamehameha, shares the names of sharks associated with Hawaiian families throughout the islands, as well as their hierarchy in Hawaiian culture.
The 30-minute show is part of an ongoing series produced by the Livable Hawai‘i Kai Hui. "Na Mano" part two is scheduled to air at 7 p.m. March 11.
‘Not Ordinary’ sale to benefit hospice
Bargain hunters and collectors will want to check out the "Not Your Ordinary Garage Sale" presented by the Hawaii Chapter of World Wings International Inc. from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 23 in the McKinley High School cafeteria.
Items for sale include a doll collection featuring a carved teak Japanese kannon (goddess) and an ohime (princess) doll in kimono with lifelike hair; colorful designer scarves, furoshiki (wrapping cloth) and tennugui (Japanese towels); Japanese calligraphy; Asian and European teapots; kimono and obi; an assortment of demitasse, including those with a "Made in Occupied Japan" mark; and Pan Am memorabilia. Shoppers also can browse for bargains on jewelry, household and kitchen items, books, CDs, DVDs, toys, clothing and accessories.
Purchases are cash only.
The World Wings group is a philanthropic organization of former Pan Am flight attendants. Proceeds will benefit St. Francis Hospice’s volunteer program. The garage sale has been held yearly since 2006, raising more than $110,000 for the hospice.
