Priscilla Ouchida, executive director of the Japa­nese American Citizens League, talked with former Gov. George Ari­yo­shi, left, and Adm. Harry B. Harris Jr., commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, after the “E Komo Kai” dinner welcoming Harris to Hawaii Feb. 7 at the Japa­nese Cultural Center. Harris told the crowd he was “deeply honored to be honored” by the league and said his Japa­nese mother had always made sure he appreciated his heritage. Ouchida noted that Harris’ career accomplishments “removed a glass ceiling” for other Asian-Americans seeking advancement in the U.S. military.

Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor Executive Director Ken H. DeHoff Jr., left, greeted retired Air Force Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson, a member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, after a seminar on the experiences of African-Americans in the military Feb. 8 at the museum. Jefferson spoke frankly about historical inaccuracies and demeaning portrayals of the Tuskegee Airmen in the 2012 film “Red Tails.” He added that the Nazis showed him more respect during his time as a prisoner of war in Germany than he received from many members of the U.S. military.

Bla Pahinui signed a copy of his new CD, “James Daniel Pahi­nui,” for Leni Knight at his CD release party Feb. 8 in Wai­mea Valley. Pahi­nui performed with several other musicians for most of the afternoon, telling stories about the songs on the album and experiences that inspired him, but closed solo with “In the Still of the Night.”
