Two accomplishments had eluded the ‘Iolani basketball team’s senior class coming into the week –a win over Maryknoll and an ILH championship.
The Raiders took care of the first step on Friday in the final of the league’s postseason tournament. By repeating the feat on consecutive nights on Maryknoll’s home court, ‘Iolani claimed its first ILH title since 2011.
Ikaika Phillip led the Raiders with 18 points, going 9-for-10 from the free-throw line, and No. 2 ‘Iolani held off a rally by the top-ranked Spartans in the final minute in a 57-54 win Saturday night at Maryknoll’s Clarence T.C. Ching Gymnasium.
The Raiders forced Saturday’s playoff for the ILH’s overall title by winning the tournament on Friday. They clinched the league’s seeded berth in this week’s Division I state tournament.
"The last two weeks have been a grind. Every one of those were must-wins for us to be in this position at all," ‘Iolani coach Dean Shimamoto said. "Unbelieveable."
‘Iolani did most of its scoring from the foul line, going 30-for-41 in the game and making 11-for-19 in the fourth quarter.
"That’s what we hang our hat on, defense and free throws," Shimamoto said, "and we were just good enough tonight."
Maryknoll guard Kaleb Gilmore led all scorers with 23 points and was 15-for-16 from the line. His lone missed free throw was intentional after the Spartans cut ‘Iolani’s eight-point lead to four with 1.2 seconds left. After making the first of two attempts, Gilmore missed the second and the rebound was tipped back to Gilmore beyond the 3-point line. Gilmore released the shot just after the buzzer sounded and ‘Iolani began its celebration as the ball went through the net.
"We had opportunities. If we had 0.5 seconds more, we would have been in overtime," said Maryknoll coach Kelly Grant, who agreed with the final ruling.
"All we can ask is for them to play hard and they did. I thought we executed for the most part. It was just that they hit some big shots."
Maryknoll guard Josh Burnett finished with 21 points and made all nine of his free throws.
‘Iolani was shorthanded in the final minute after guard Pikai Winchester left the game with an injury and Phillip and point guard Erik Yamada fouled out. But Zach Gelacio scored all seven of his points in the fourth quarter to help the Raiders hang on.
"Those are three of the guys we finish with," Shimamoto said. "To go three guys down … it’s a testament to our guys being ready off the bench."
