No. 7 Oregon has opened three straight seasons frustrating the Hawaii baseball team.
On Sunday, the Ducks did more than just that, delivering a punch straight to the Rainbow Warriors’ gut.
A.J. Balta and J.B. Bryant strung together consecutive run-scoring hits as pinch hitters in the ninth inning to erase a two-run deficit, and Tyler Baumgartner scored the winning run on Hawaii’s fifth error of the game in the 10th inning for a 6-5 win.
UH (0-3) was two outs away from snapping a nine-game losing streak to Oregon (3-0) when the Ducks rallied in front of a Les Murakami Stadium crowd of 1,543.
Balta, who untied Saturday’s game with a pinch-hit, two-run single in the seventh, doubled off the glove of Kaeo Aliviado in center, allowing Connor Hofmann to score to make it a one-run game. Bryant followed with a single off UH reliever Jordan DePonte, pitching for the third straight game, to send the game into extras.

DePonte (0-1) loaded the bases with nobody out and gave way to freshman Bryce Ah Sam, who got Steven Packard to ground into a fielder’s choice.
Hofmann followed with a slow-hit grounder to short that Austin Wobrock threw low into the dirt at first. Marcus Doi couldn’t pick it and Baumgartner scored from third for the winning run.
"We’re throwing balls all over the place and we’re now at a point where we’re fielding with no confidence, and that’s why we keep making all of these errors," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "We’ve got to be fearless."
UH has made 11 in three games against Oregon, which hasn’t been much better. The Ducks have made eight errors, and freshman starter Matt Krook threw seven wild pitches on Sunday. Oregon has walked 16 batters and hit three more.
"I think it’s fair to say even though we feel very good about being 3-0 that neither team has command of the defensive side of the equation," Oregon coach George Horton said. "Until we get a handle on that, we aren’t going anywhere."
Things stayed even with starters Krook and Scott Squier on the mound.
Krook, the No. 35 overall pick in last summer’s draft, chose to go to school instead and gave Horton quite a performance in his first outing.
The 6-foot-3 lefty, pumping a fastball in the low 90s for much of the game, did not allow an earned run and struck out eight, giving up five hits.
UH only hit two balls in the air off Krook and was 0-for-9 against him with runners in scoring position.
"Krook has probably the best pure stuff we’ve seen in a few years and we’ve seen an awful lot of really, really good pitchers," Trapasso said. "That is just ridiculously good stuff that he has."
UH got two more hits off Krook than the Ducks did off Squier, who gave up three in seven innings, with three walks and eight strikeouts.
Oregon brought in reliever Garrett Cleavinger, who was 9-0 with a 1.24 ERA last season as a freshman, to preserve a 3-2 lead.
Wobrock, who had three hits and is hitting .400 in the series, was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs for second baseman Stephen Ventimilia, who had struck out three times.
Trapasso brought in sophomore Alan Baldwin as a pinch hitter, and Baldwin lifted a 3-2 pitch that dropped into left for a two-run single, scoring Kalei Hanawahine and Conner George.
Doi, who scored twice, followed with an RBI single off closer Jake Reed to put the Rainbow Warriors ahead 5-3.
"It’s kind of a blur, but I got a fastball and I hit it," Baldwin said. "I just try to drown out everything."
The Ducks will try for their second straight season-opening sweep in the final game of the series Monday at 1:05 p.m. Horton will attempt to win his 900th game as a college head coach. He was 226-53 at Cerritos College and 490-212-1 at Cal State Fullerton before going 183-125-1 with the Ducks since 2009.
Senior right-hander Scott Kuzminsky will get the start for Hawaii, which outhit the Ducks for the second time in three games.
"The way we’ve played all weekend offensively and our overall toughness and grit is as good as you could ask for," Trapasso said. "We just have to make plays defensively. We should have won the game. We gave another one away."
