HPU luring students with ‘Sharks Night’
Students interested in attending Hawaii Pacific University can get a glimpse of campus life at "Frenzy: Sharks Night at the Blaisdell," being held in connection with two college basketball games Monday.
The event will feature prize giveaways, an admissions information table and photo opportunities with Sharky the HPU mascot. Students are encouraged to don "Tacky Aloha Wear" for a halftime contest with prizes.
It’s also Senior Night for the men’s and women’s basketball teams, and Kam’s Helmets Night with a giveaway of sport and moped helmets. The basketball games against Fresno Pacific University tip off at 4:30 p.m., with the women’s contest followed by the men’s game at 6:30 p.m.
Admission is free with a student ID from any school or college. Otherwise admission is $5, $3 for senior citizens and free for children.
15 vying to represent isles at poetry final
Fifteen high school students from Oahu, Kauai and Hawaii island will compete in the statewide finals of the Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. March 2 at Tenney Theatre, home of Honolulu Theatre for Youth. The free event will be emceed by Ben Gutierrez.
The winner will receive $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip with a chaperone to Washington, D.C., to compete in the national finals, April 28-30, where $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be distributed.
Poetry Out Loud is presented in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, and administered in Hawaii by HTY and the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
