Sea Warriors fall short at Cal Baptist
Ryan Berg scored 19 points and conference leader Cal Baptist survived a scare from Hawaii Pacific by pulling away for a 79-68 men’s hoops win in Riverside, Calif.
Anthony Cosentino added 16 points and Chris Brown 15 for the Lancers (23-1, 17-1).
Malte Ziegenhagen finished with 18 points, with Farbod Farman adding a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) for the Sea Warriors (12-11, 7-10), who led 44-39 at halftime.
Azusa Pacific rattles Hawaii Hilo
Tyler Monroe scored 17 points and Robert Sandoval added 16, but it was not enough as Hawaii Hilo remained winless in men’s conference play in a 92-79 loss to Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Calif.
Darnell Williams dominated with a 31-point performance off the bench for the Cougars (14-8, 9-7), and Brandon Thomas added 16.
Troy Leaf had 13 points for the Vulcans (3-19, 0-16).
Vulcans stop Cougars to snap losing break
Kirstie Williams scored 22 points, going 7-for-10 in 3-point shooting, and Hawaii Hilo snapped a seven-game losing streak by upsetting host Azusa Pacific 78-73 in women’s conference play Monday in Azusa, Calif.
McKenzie Mangino added 16 points and Whitney Edens 11 for the Vulcans (7-13, 5-10), who hit 11 of 23 3-point attempts and were 13-for-14 from the line.
Sandy Valles led the Cougars (16-7, 14-3) with 32 points, including 9-for-9 shooting from the free-throw line and three of the team’s eight 3-pointers. Kelly Hardeman added 12 points for APU, the second-place team in the conference.
Cal Baptist trips Hawaii Pacific
Cassidy Mihalko scored 22 points and Jasmine Sauser added 16 as Cal Baptist handed Hawaii Pacific its third straight women’s road loss, 74-60 in Riverside, Calif.
Morganna Comstock led the Sea Warriors (14-9, 11-7) with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Ieva Nagy also had 12 points and Shianne Solomon 11.
Chanel Combronero added 12 points for the Lancers (14-10, 12-6), who outscored HPU 41-28 in the second half.
Men’s honor roll
» Justin Long, HPU: The junior guard led all conference scorers by averaging 28.5 points. He had a season-high 33 points with five 3-pointers in a 91-84 loss at Point Loma.
SOFTBALL
Sea Warriors earn doubleheader split
Dorian Acierto’s two-run, bases-loaded single in the top of the seventh proved to be difference as Hawaii Pacific rebounded from a Game 1 blowout to edge Azusa Pacific 4-3 in the nightcap of a conference doubleheader in Azusa, Calif.
The host Cougars (10-3, 1-1) scored nine runs in the first two innings to run away to an 11-5 win in the opener in five innings. Chandell Dacosin went 2-for-3 and HPU (1-0, 1-1) scored three runs in the fourth on a wild pitch and two bases-loaded walks.
In Game 2, Dacosin — moving from designated player to pitcher — scattered eight hits with one strikeout. APU rallied in the bottom of the seventh with two runs and had two runners on, but Dacosin got the final batter to ground out.
Vulcans’ Lee earns conference honor
Hawaii Hilo senior shortstop Rebecca Lee, the conference preseason player of the year, lived up to the hype with an outstanding performance at the Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas.
The Mililani High product hit .680 with a 1.520 slugging percentage in being named the PacWest Player of the Week. She had seven doubles, four home runs, one triple and 19 RBIs as the Vulcans went 4-1.
Her biggest game of the tournament came against Humboldt State, when she went 3-for-4 with six RBIs and two runs scored. Lee homered and drove in four runs in each of the final two tournament games against Fort Lewis and Regis.
GOLF
Vulcans ninth at Lady Rattler tournament
The Hawaii Hilo women’s golf team was in ninth place heading into Tuesday’s final round of the Lady Rattler Invitational at San Antonio’s Dominion Golf Course.
The Vulcans carded a 326, 19 strokes behind leader Tarleton State in the 18-team field. Senior Kacie Harada led UHH with a 7-over 79, tying her for 14th, five strokes back of co-leaders Jessica Pickwick of Tarleton State and Northeastern State’s Sofia Castiello.
TENNIS
HPU blanks Hilo in women’s, men’s play
The fourth-ranked Hawaii Pacific women’s tennis team ran its record to 5-0 and the fifth-ranked Sea Warriors men also remained unbeaten by defeating Hawaii Hilo by identical 9-0 scores at the Holua Resort on Hawaii island.
In women’s play, the Sea Warriors didn’t drop a set in singles and won all three doubles matches 8-0.
The HPU men also won their six singles matches in straight sets.The doubles teams of Petr Michnev/Thibaud Berland and Jaume Martinez-Vich/Mattis Wetzel both notched 8-0 wins, and Adriano Locorotondo and Yann Renault defeated Thomas Dols-Spencer Travalino 8-6.
