Water advisory issued for Kauai after heavy rain
Kauai is under a brown-water advisory after heavy rain Friday morning, state Department of Health officials announced.
The public is advised to stay out of floodwaters and stormwater runoff due to possible overflowing cesspools, sewer manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals and associated flood debris. If coastal waters are turbid and brown, stay out.
Heavy rain forced school and road closures and a scare for Hanapepe residents.
The rain also prompted county officials to build barriers on Hanapepe Road to protect Hanapepe town from flooding as river levels nearly overflowed the one-lane bridge into town.
Eleele Elementary, Waimea Canyon Middle, Waimea High and Kekaha Elementary schools were closed after classes began. The state Department of Education closed Hanalei Elementary School before the opening bell because of the weather.
The warning prompted the Department of Land and Natural Resources to close Kalalau Trail on the island’s north shore. It was reopened at 12:15 p.m.
