Shim called up to U-23 team
Portland Thorns midfielder Meleana Shim has been called up by the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Soccer Team for the Six Nations Tournament that starts on March 1 in La Manga, Spain.
Shim, a Kamehameha graduate, played for Santa Clara before being drafted by the National Women’s Soccer League. She was the Thorns’ Newcomer of the Year last season, when she had five goals and two assists.
The U.S. faces Japan on March 1, Sweden on March 3 and Norway on March 5.
Lancers sweep Sea Warriors in softball
Ninth-ranked Cal Baptist used five home runs, including a walk-off in the finale, to defeat Hawaii Pacific 9-0 and 8-7 in a PacWest softball doubleheader in Riverside, Calif.
The Lancers (16-3, 7-1 PacWest) ran their winning streak to four games. The Sea Warriors (1-7, 1-7) have lost six straight.
Kam’s Helmets Night at Blaisdell
The 3rd Kam’s Helmets Night, a bike and skateboard helmet giveaway in honor of the late Kameron Steinhoff, is Monday in conjunction with the Hawaii Pacific men’s basketball game at Blaisdell Arena.
Steinhoff, a Sea Warriors basketball player and the state high school player of the year out of Punahou, died from a head injury suffered in a skateboarding accident in 2011.
Helmets will be given out to students of any grade level during halftime of the game between the Sea Warriors and Notre Dame de Namur. All ticket proceeds will also be donated to the program. For information, call Lauren Conching at 356-5223 or email lconching@hpu.edu.
