Author will address annual conference
Matt de la Pena, author of such young-adult novels as "Ball Don’t Lie, "Mexican White Boy," "We Were Here" and "The Living," will be a keynote speaker at the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators’ annual Hawaii conference March 1.
In his talk, titled "Working Class Writer: Beyond Inspiration," de la Pena will explain the importance of hard work and mastering the mechanics of story writing to create works that young readers will love, according to an event announcement. He will conduct a separate workshop on writing authentic dialogue.
De la Pena teaches creative writing at the Vermont College of Fine Arts and visits high schools and colleges across the country.
He won the 2014 Pura Belpre Award, which is presented to writers and illustrators whose work "best portrays, affirms and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in literature for children and youth."
In another keynote address, Marietta Zacker of the Nancy Galt Literary Agency will share an inside look at the world of children’s publishing from an agent’s perspective.
Her workshop is titled "Unlocking the Mystery of Submitting Manuscripts to Agents and Editors."
The conference will be held at the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaii. The fee is $100 per person for members and $130 for nonmembers.
