Cooler, clearer weather forecast
Muggy air will give way to cooler conditions over the next few days as skies clear from Oahu to Hawaii island, according to the National Weather Service.
Unstable conditions that prompted a flood advisory on Oahu early Saturday morning were expected to resolve overnight as a lingering trough moves eastward past the island chain.
Forecasters predict that north winds will bring cooler, dry air across the state, causing day and nighttime temperatures to drop a few degrees below normal.
According to the weather service, weak and shallow cold fronts are expected to move in from the north over the first half of the coming week.
A stronger front is expected to arrive next weekend, bringing with it the possibility of locally heavy rainfall.
A flood advisory for Oahu expired at 1:30 a.m. Saturday after heavy rain on the North Shore and Windward Oahu. At 10:30 p.m. Friday, radar showed heavy rain between Turtle Bay and Pupukea and near Hauula.
The heavy showers — estimated at 2 to 3 inches per hour — were nearly stationary, the weather service said.
There are currently no active weather warnings, watches or advisories in effect.
But Kauai remains under a brown water advisory, issued by the state Health Department, after heavy rains and runoff Friday.
Volcanoes park partners with Chinese facility
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is forming a sister park relationship with a national park in China.
Wudalianchi National Park is near China’s border with Russia and has 14 volcanoes. Two are active but aren’t currently erupting. The park is also known for its mineral springs, boulders and lava tubes. About 1 million people visit the park each year.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii island has two active volcanoes. Kilauea is currently erupting at two locations while Mauna Loa last erupted in 1984.
The Hawaii park said Friday the new partners will exchange managerial, technical and professional knowledge.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park also has a sister park agreement with Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes of South Korea.
