Owls to honor ’90 baseball team
Mid-Pacific Institute’s M Club will honor the 1990 Owls baseball team at the Koolau Ballrooms on Saturday.
MPI’s ’90 team was the first of five to win a state championship. M Club will also honor Bill Wheeler, a 1978 alumnus, who guided the girls basketball team to an ILH title in ’86, then led the boys team to league crowns in ’98 and ’00. He earned league coach of the year honors three times.

And he’s only a freshman
Hugh Hogland left his mark on the state championships, all right.
‘Iolani’s 6-foot-7 freshman saw spot duty during the regular season but became a prime contributor on defense as the Raiders stormed to the boys basketball title.
Hogland had four points and two blocks in a win over Lahainaluna; four points and seven blocks in a victory over Campbell; and four points, eight rebounds and two blocks against Farrington in the final. He didn’t play more than 18 minutes in any of the three tourney games.
"I really tried to bring this championship home for our seniors. They’ve never been here before and this is their last game, their last chance," Hogland said. "I was just fortunate enough to tag along, to contribute to the team and make my presence felt."
