The Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii celebrates youths who inspire others with their leadership, resilience and service at the annual Youth of the Year awards, set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 8 at the Hawaii Prince Hotel.
The club serves keiki from disadvantaged backgrounds, helping to develop character and leadership. Tickets to the event are $125 with tables starting at $1,000; call 949-4203.

Oatmeal Bites
2 cups old-fashioned oatmeal
1 cup smooth peanut butter
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup mashed ripe banana (about 2 medium bananas)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper; set aside.
In a medium bowl, stir together all ingredients.
Scoop dough in rounded tablespoons onto prepared sheets about 1 inch apart. Bake 7-10 minutes or until they are firm. Makes 40 mini cookies.

Crunchy Roasted Furikake Chickpeas
Nonstick vegetable spray
2 (15-ounce) cans garbanzo beans (chickpeas), rinsed and drained
2 tablespoons olive oil
4 tablespoons local honey
4 tablespoons nori komi furikake (prepared seaweed)
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Coat baking sheet with nonstick spray. Spread chickpeas onto prepared baking sheet and pat dry thoroughly. Skins may peel off as you pat them. Remove or leave on as desired.
Place in oven and roast 15 minutes, then drizzle with olive oil. Mix beans to make sure they are evenly coated. Drizzle with honey, then sprinkle with furikake. Mix to coat beans evenly. Add more honey and furikake if desired.
Return to oven; roast another 15 minutes, then turn off oven and crack open door. Leave beans inside 30 minutes.
Store at room temperature. Serves 4.

Chocolate Milkshake Smoothie
1 ripe banana
1/2 cup raw cashews or raw sunflower seeds
2 to 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder, or to taste
1/4 cup cacao nibs (available at specialty stores)
1-1/2 cups unsweetened almond milk
1 tablespoon coconut oil
10 ice cubes
In blender, puree all ingredients until smooth. Divide between 2 glasses and serve immediately. Serves 2.
