The man who was dragged under a car that had run over him in Waianae last week is in the hospital in a medically induced coma, Deputy City Prosecutor Chastity Imamura told Circuit Judge Richard Perkins on Tuesday.
Perkins confirmed the $200,000 bail for the alleged driver of the car, Miguel Torres. An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment against Torres on Tuesday charging him with one count of first-degree attempted murder and two counts of second-degree attempted murder.
Torres remains in custody unable to post bail.
The indictment charges Torres with attempting to kill Henry Akuna, 35, and Akuna’s companion, Marlena Montez.
Police said Torres drove his vehicle at and struck both Akuna and Montez in the parking lot of the Waimaha/Sunflower public housing complex on Feb. 17. Torres allegedly then backed up, struck Akuna again and ran over him.
Imamura said Akuna became pinned, and was dragged under the car for about a third of a mile as Torres drove forward, running multiple stop signs as other motorists and bystanders yelled at him to stop. Akuna was freed from the undercarriage when Torres put his car into reverse at Tamura Superette, she said.
Akuna’s injuries include a mangled left arm and facial fractures.
Montez refused treatment at the scene but later went to Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, where she was treated and released, police said.
