Separate fires destroy homes and displace 3
Hawaii County fire investigators are trying to determine the causes of fires that leveled an unpermitted, unoccupied Pahoa house Sunday night and destroyed a Mountain View home Tuesday.
The Sunday fire was reported at 8:12 p.m. at Molokai and Alii roads in Nanawale Estates. It was fully involved when firefighters arrived at 8:28 p.m. and collapsed before firefighters brought the flames under control at 8:50 p.m. The fire was extinguished at 10:05 p.m.
Damage to the 1,200-square-foot structure was estimated at $140,000.
The Mountain View fire left three people homeless.
The fire started just before noon Tuesday in the Maui Street home near Livingston Lane, firefighters said.
No one was home and no one was hurt. Damages were estimated to be $45,000.
The Red Cross said its volunteers were responding to help with emergency needs.
Police seeking suspect in Kihei bank robbery
Maui police are looking for a man who allegedly robbed a Bank of Hawaii location in Kihei on Sunday afternoon.
According to police, the suspect approached a Bank of Hawaii counter in a Safeway store and handed a teller a note demanding money.
The suspect fled the store with an undisclosed amount of money.
