The number of Division I California schools Mike Trapasso has never faced as Hawaii’s head coach is about to become one.
The Rainbow Warriors take a four-game winning streak into their series against Pepperdine (6-1) starting Wednesday night, marking the first time the Rainbow Warriors and Waves have played since 2000.
That will leave Cal State Bakersfield, which only earned full-time Division I status in 2010 and now plays in the Western Athletic Conference, as the only team left in California that Trapasso hasn’t scheduled.
Does the longtime UH skipper, who will coach his 700th game with the Rainbow Warriors on Friday, still get excited to face someone new?
"I think so. I think it’s always fun to play somebody different and it’s just one of those weird things the way it’s worked out," Trapasso said Tuesday. "They’re a great program off to a great start and it’s going to be a great challenge for us."
His team took care of business against Albany last week, earning a four-game sweep.
The Rainbow Warriors won two of those games without freshman Marcus Doi, who aggravated a groin injury he suffered before the season began.
Trapasso said Doi is still day-to-day. The coach said he wants to be cautious this early in the season, but Doi, who is hitting .417 (10-for-24) with a triple and six runs scored, said he’s ready to get back out there.
"I couldn’t run anymore so I had to sit down but if I can handle it, then I’ll play through it and that’s what I want to do this week," Doi said. "I’ll get it out now before conference and hopefully when we come back from Texas, I’ll be 100 percent."
Senior Adam Hurley stepped in for Doi and went 5-for-7 with a walk and two RBIs.
Pepperdine, which was picked to finish second in the West Coast Conference, received votes in this week’s NCBWA poll after sweeping four games from Utah Valley.
The Waves have played their first seven games at home, taking two of three from St. John’s to start the season.
Pepperdine features two local products catcher Kolten Yamaguchi, a preseason first-team All-West Coast Conference pick, and relief pitcher Ivan Dilda.
Yamaguchi, who is from the Big Island, did not play against Utah Valley.
Dilda, who went to Mid-Pacific and was a high school teammate with Doi two years ago, has made one appearance.
"They’re coming in with some really good numbers both on the offensive end and the pitching side," Trapasso said. "We’re definitely going to have to play better than we have been."
Trapasso is tinkering with his starting rotation again this week, moving junior Jarrett Arakawa into the fourth spot so that he can have a full week of rest between starts.
Senior Matt Cooper, who will start the opener for the third straight week, has not given up an earned run this season, but still isn’t quite where both he and Trapasso want him to be.
"He definitely hasn’t been at his best yet, but with that said, he hasn’t pitched bad," Trapasso said. "He’s set a standard for himself where he hasn’t been pleased with his last two outings but he’s still had the fastball command to keep him in games."
Hawaii is 8-2 all-time against Pepperdine, but one of those loses came with a College World Series berth on the line.
After losing to Southeastern Louisiana in the opening game of the 1992 NCAA West Regional, the Rainbows won four straight, including a 6-3 victory over Pepperdine to force a winner-take-all playoff against the Waves.
Pepperdine shut out Hawaii 9-0 to reach the College World Series, which the Waves ended up winning, defeating Cal State Fullerton in the championship game.
