Smell leads man to decomposed body
A man found a badly decomposed body Wednesday morning on a hillside near the top of Wilhelmina Rise.
Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said the man was flying a radio-controlled helicopter in his backyard at Kawelolani Place. When he went to retrieve it, he smelled an odor, found the body and called 911 about 10:45 a.m. Police said the body was of a 48-year-old man.
OCCC inmate arrested for alleged escape
A 40-year-old Oahu Community Correctional Center inmate was arrested on suspicion of escape Monday night after failing to return to the prison from a furlough at 4 p.m. Sunday.
The inmate was serving time for unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and second-degree burglary. His next parole hearing was scheduled for July.
2 hikers rescued on Hahaione Ridge
Fire rescue personnel Wednesday afternoon rescued two residents in their 50s who were hiking on Hahaione Ridge.
The man and woman had hiked the ridge trail and were near the summit at 1:09 p.m. when they became stranded for some reason and called for help, fire Capt. Terry Seelig said. No one was injured. The Fire Department launched a helicopter, which flew the pair out at 2:45 p.m.
New camera technology nabs Mililani man
A Mililani man arrested Saturday with the help of new camera technology adopted by the Honolulu Police Department was charged with multiple offenses Monday.
An HPD officer using a recently installed automated license plate reader — which allows for rapid search of HPD’s database of vehicles and drivers — stopped Maui Remigio, 25, in Moiliili as Remigio was allegedly driving a vehicle that was reported stolen.
Remigio was charged Monday with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, possession of burglary tools, third-degree possession of dangerous drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, air gun restrictions and three contempt warrants. Remigio’s bail was set at $15,000.
