MISO-MJL holding soccer tryouts
Kentaro Yokoyama of Japan is the featured coach at the inaugural Men’s Island Soccer Organization/MISO Junior League elite tryouts starting Friday at Cartwright Field.
The tryouts are for U12 and U16 boys for select travel teams that will train in Japan in July.
Friday’s tryouts are from 8 to 9:30 p.m. The March 7 tryouts are at the Waipio Soccer Park from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Rugby union play starts Saturday
Rugby Hawaii Union season opens Saturday with a triple header at Kapiolani Park. The 12:25 p.m. opener is between Marist Hawaii and Seasiders. The women’s 7s match pits the Lady Quins against the Lady Raiders at 1:55 p.m. The featured "Challenge Cup" match has the host Hawaii Harlequins against the Titans at 2:30 p.m.
Smith wins Makaha time trial
Jason Smith won last Sunday’s Makaha Beach Time Trial cycling race, finishing the 18-kilometer course at Kaena Point Beach Park in 23 minutes, 43 seconds.
The 38-year-old Smith was 26 seconds ahead of Alexander Eller, the top finisher in the Masters 35 division, and 41 seconds ahead of Ray Brust, third overall with the top time in the Golden Masters 50-54 division. The top female was Erika Eberhart in 24:18.
Extreme Cowboy race Saturday
The first Extreme Cowboy race of the season is set for Saturday at Pohaku Nui Ranch in Kahuku. Divisions range from pro to young guns (ages 7-11). There’s also a new intermediate division and rule changes.

Lenny joins Lopez for surf, yoga retreat
Reigning Standup Paddle World Tour champion Kai Lenny of Maui will join surf legend Gerry Lopez at Lopez’s Surf Realization & Yoga Retreat, Monday through Thursday at Turtle Bay Resort.
The retreat will offer yoga, meditation surfing and SUP hosted by Lopez, who won the Pipeline Masters in 1972 and ’73, and founded Battle of the Paddle, a popular SUP competition. Lenny, a three-time SUP wave and two-time SUP race world champion, finished second at the recent Standup World Tour opener, the Sunset Beach Pro.

Splash Aquatics earns swim-a-thon award
Oahu’s Splash Aquatics was one of four gold medalists in the USA Swimming Foundation’s Swim-A-Thon Contest.
Among the prizes the club won was an upcoming feature in USAS’s Splash magazine and and a gift certificate to host a celebration pizza party. Gold medals were awarded to clubs earning the most points raised based on size during the inaugural fundraising event that ran from January through November of last year. The event raised over $5.6 million.
Tenri Judo hosting Olympian at clinics
Two-time judo Olympian Travis Stevens and Hannah Martin, the top-ranked U.S. female judoka in her weight class, will be featured at two clinics hosted by Hawaii Tenri Judo Club on March 8.
The fee is $20. Sessions are 1 to 2 p.m. for intermediate and younger, 2:30 to 5 p.m. for competition and advanced players. The event is co-sponsored by the Judo Black Belt Association of Hawaii. All proceeds will be given to Stevens and Martin for continued training expenses as they try to qualify for the 2016 Olympics. The dojo is located at 2236 Nuuanu Ave.
Sustainable girls surf camp set
The Ocean Girl Project spring sustainable surf camp, introducing girls to surfing and other ocean activities, is scheduled for March 17-21 near Waikiki.
The camp is open to girls ages 9-12 and runs from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. each day. The cost is $500 with financial aid available. Participants must be able to swim. For information, contact Colleen Kudo at 852–0106.
